Hong Kong protesters play cat-and-mouse game with police on subway

New Zealand urges 'increased caution' for visitors in Hong Kong

"Every person who cherishes Hong Kong and loves peace should work hard together and safeguard our lovely home".

Across Victoria Harbour, protesters wearing gas masks and other protective gear gathered outside a police station in Cheung Sha Wan in Kowloon, where another march was under way.

Fong, who was carrying 10 recently purchased laser pointers, none of which was equipped with a power supply, was later released without charge.

In the last two weeks, as the question "is Hong Kong still safe to visit" became popular on travel websites, more than 20 countries raised their travel advisories for Hong Kong, with the USA, United Kingdom and Australia joining earlier this week. At one point protesters blocked the entrance to a plaza to prevent police from entering.

Anti-extradition bill protesters react from tear gas as riot police try to disperse them during a protest at Sham Shui Po in Hong Kong, China August 11, 2019.

Some of the protests have turned violent and resulted in clashes between police officers and protesters, with one side resorting to tear gas, rubber bullets and other projectiles, and the other side countering it by throwing bricks, bamboo sticks and gasoline bombs.

Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters rally at Hong Kong's worldwide airport on Friday.

"We are a group of Hong Kong people fighting for human rights and freedom". Even though Hong Kong authorities agreed to suspend the bill, demonstrations continued, with calls for it to be fully withdrawn. The announcement also stated that "China will safeguard national sovereignty and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability is unwavering and opposes any country, organization, and individual to interfere in Hong Kong affairs in any way".

Last Friday police banned four marches planned for Saturday and Sunday.

Protests looked likely to continue well into the night with police stationed at a number of subway exits across the city in apparent preparation to tackle new flashmob protest tactics.

And the city's Beijing-appointed leader Carrie Lam has made clear she will not grant the protesters' demands, which include a full withdrawal of the now-suspended extradition bill, direct election of the city's leader and an investigation into police violence.

Hong Kong's embattled and deeply unpopular leader, Carrie Lam, appeared in public for the first time in two weeks on Monday, condemning the protesters and saying that they had pushed the territory "to the verge of a very unsafe situation".

Though China has not yet officially declared that it plans to use the PLA's presence in Hong Kong to combat worsening protests, Wednesday's comments appear to be the most explicit reference to Chinese military intervention in the city since its handover.

By Sunday afternoon, over a thousand black-clad protesters peacefully swarmed the airport arrivals hall, chanting "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our time".

Hong Kong's chief executive held that line on Friday.

"As Chinese, we were all saddened by recent acts of insulting the national emblem and flag", said the organizer of the gathering, who only gave his surname Lim.

Asked if Britain has a special responsibility to intervene, he said: "I think Britain has been laughed about by the Chinese government".
