Hong Kong leader defends police, dodges protesters' demands

Watch live: Hong Kong airport cancels flights amid continued protests

Flight check-in services have again been suspended at Hong Kong's worldwide airport, the airport authority says, citing disruptions caused by anti-government protests.

Authorities at Hong Kong airport today cancelled all departing flights after pro-democracy protesters blocked the facility for a second day. It has fallen 6% since the protests began in June. Hong Kong's airport is the 8th busiest by passenger traffic, handling 73 million passengers a year.

An anti-government protester holds a banner in front of a flight information board during a demonstration at Hong Kong Airport, China August 13, 2019.

Hong Kong's chief executive, Carrie Lam, defended police action against the demonstrators, saying authorities were trying to use "the lowest level of force" to deal with the protesters.

Protests at the airport have escalated, culminating in its temporary closure and disruption to hundreds of flights, including to long-haul departures to the US, Australia and the UK.

The semi-autonomous southern Chinese city has endured weeks of protests triggered by a government bid to introduce a law that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China.

The rights office urged Hong Kong authorities to investigate examples of officers firing tear gas canisters into crowded, enclosed areas and directly at individual protesters.

"In terms of withdrawing the bill, using this specific term, which the protesters have called for, do you as Hong Kong's leader have the autonomy to decide to withdraw the bill, yes or no, or is this something that Beijing has to approve as well?"

President Trump said Tuesday that he's learned the Chinese government is sending its military to the Hong Kong border amid mounting clashes between riot police and pro-democracy protesters.

Congress Must Immediately Address Gun Violence in the US
Amnesty International said the travel advisory is being issued in light of ongoing high levels of gun violence in the country. The warning tells travelers to be extra vigilant at all times and "be wary of the ubiquity of firearms among the population".

"Hong Kong has arrived at a critical point".

Cathay Pacific said last week that it had removed a pilot from duty in July who had been arrested during one of the protests.

As evening fell, protesters at the airport surrounded a man who they suspected to be a Chinese policeman.

"What he should say, for example, to ambassador Bolton.is that he very much hopes the Americans will agree with us that.it will be a catastrophe if China was to intervene in Hong Kong".

"This wantonly tramples on Hong Kong's rule of law and social order", he said.

And depending on the airline, Mr Thomas said people may be able to change the route they're flying, so they stop somewhere other than Hong Kong.

Australian consular officials have been sent to the Hong Kong Airport to assist any stranded Australian passengers during this hectic time. Beijing said on Monday the protests had begun to show "sprouts of terrorism" and the city's airport was closed.

The official state news agency Xinhua warned in a commentary Tuesday that "violent radicals" were pushing Hong Kong into an "abyss".
