Hong Kong airport suspends check-ins due to pro-democracy protest

The atmosphere was markedly different from the peaceful sit-in that protesters staged for a third and final day at the airport, billed as way to explain the movement to arriving visitors.

What began as opposition to a proposed bill to allow people to be extradited to mainland China to stand trial in Communist Party-controlled courts has evolved into calls for greater democracy in Hong Kong. Over the weekend, signs emerged that Hong Kong authorities used more aggression against demonstrators, with riot police videotaped beating demonstrators in subway stations.

In addition to the words, an image of Taiwan and one of "Raincoat Man" - honoring Marco Leung (梁凌杰), a Hong Konger who died on June 15 wearing a yellow rain poncho after falling from construction scaffolding in front of Pacific Place in the Admiralty district while hanging protest banners, were displayed.

Elsewhere scuffles broke out between pro-Beijing residents and unidentified bystanders as well as media, with police intervening in some cases to pull people apart. A spokesman declared that there was "no longer any fixed period of time or fixed locations for these persistent and large-scale illegal and violent acts".

Earlier, a large group of mostly young protesters marched down the middle of Hennessey Road, a main shopping drag in the Causeway Bay area, as a rally was held in nearby Victoria Park.

Raab condemned "violent acts by all sides but emphasised the right to peaceful protest", and "underlined that the violence should not cloud the lawful actions of the majority", the United Kingdom foreign office said in a statement.

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd shares headed for a decade low in Hong Kong trading after Chinese authorities hit out at the airline because its employees joined anti-Beijing protests. "He underlined that the violence should not cloud the lawful actions of the majority".

Apple announces developer iPhones with root access for security research

Cathay's actions, or lack thereof "have led to a severe threat to aviation safety, created negative social impact and increased the risk of flying from Hong Kong to the mainland", the Civil Aviation Administration of China said in its statement.

Raab's call drew the ire of the Chinese regime.

Showcasing the slick design that has characterized the protests, other pamphlets and posters also advertised planned demonstrations as "new tourist spots", handed out airline tickets "to freedom" and advised tourists what to do if they were caught in the protests during their visit.

Cathay has suspended a pilot who has been accused of rioting after allegedly participating in the Hong Kong protests.

By appealing to the worldwide community, and making sure it is their message that most foreigners are seeing, protesters have shown themselves adept at public relations. They are calling on the government to listen to public demands particularly an independent investigation into the handling of the protests.

It comes as the Chinese government continues to ramp up its propaganda output in an effort to control the narrative about the protests, at least domestically.

"If the government thinks we'll give up and not come out anymore they're wrong", said student Chris Wong, 20, at Tai Po.
