Trump unimpressed with US-Mexico trade talks

If tariffs go into force on Monday the US will find itself in serious trade disputes with both China and Mexico

The two sides met on Wednesday for discussions led by Vice President Mike Pence in an effort to strike a deal that would satisfy the US president, who has called for the imposition of tariffs from Monday.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows some of 1,036 migrants who crossed the U.S. -Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, the largest that the Border Patrol says it has ever encountered, May 29, 2019. But they're rattled by Trump's talk of imposing tariffs on goods from Mexico - warning that it could hurt the auto industry, one of the state's most important employers. The minister had said previously in the day that there were unspecified "advances" after meeting with USA counterparts at the State Department.

"Yes, I think we have advances today", he told reporters after more than two hours of negotiations with mid-level U.S. officials. "I think we are advancing".

The Washington Post had reported earlier Thursday that Mexico pledged to send National Guard troops to the border.

The Mexican official and the US official said the countries are negotiating a sweeping plan to overhaul asylum rules across the region, a move that would require Central Americans to seek refuge in the first foreign country they set foot upon after fleeing their homeland.

The proposal would also allow the U.S. to deport Guatemalan asylum seekers to Mexico and Honduran and Salvadoran asylum seekers to Guatemala.

But the USA has not proposed concrete metrics to assess whether Mexico is complying, and it is unclear whether even those steps would be enough to satisfy Trump on illegal immigration, a signature issue of his presidency and one that he sees as crucial to his 2020 re-election campaign.

"They are telling us they are told by smugglers, they are hearing announcements in their own country, that if they come right now and bring a child, they will be released", she said. "The higher the Tariffs go, the higher the number of companies that will move back to the U.S.!"

As of now, "we're moving forward with the tariffs and they will go into effect Monday", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters Friday on Air Force One before departing Ireland.

"We have been working this afternoon, we still do not have an agreement", Ebrard said Thursday as talks wrapped for the day.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said he is optimistic about defusing a potential trade war that analysts have said could tip his country's economy into recession.

"We think that a deal will be reached because that's the best for Mexico and the United States to maintain relations that are friendly ... that there be communication and an understanding".

Mr Trump wants Mexico to stop the hundreds of thousands of mostly Central American migrants who have been seeking entry to the USA this year.

The unexpected announcement rattled global financial markets and even Trump's fellow Republicans fretted about the potential economic impact on US businesses and consumers who would have to absorb the costs. It was the highest monthly figure in 13 years.

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist and Heritage Foundation's Tori Whiting on President Trump's plan to impose new tariffs on Mexico. Numerous lawmakers fear rising consumer costs for Americans if the tariffs are imposed on Mexican goods, including cars and numerous food products exported to the U.S.

Beyond Trump and several White House advisers, few in his administration believe the tariffs are a good idea, according to officials familiar with internal deliberations.
