Trump threatens more tariffs on Mexico over part of immigration deal

"It has an enforcement feature to it because these tariffs can go on at any time", White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said in an interview with Fox News Channel.

The president spent the weekend and Monday morning defending the U.S. -Mexico agreement on Twitter against criticisms the deal does not include anything new. After all, if Mexico or any other country wants access to the crown jewel of global commerce - the American consumer market - then it must act as a responsible partner.

This led Trump to withdraw his threat to add tariffs on Mexican imports.

As illegal immigration overwhelmed border officials and facilities, Trump responded with a threat of tariffs on Mexico that were scheduled to go into effect Monday, but he "indefinitely suspended" them in light of the newly announced U.S. -Mexico deal.

If Mexico agreed, the policy would dramatically reduce the thousands of immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador seeking asylum at the USA border each month.

A day before, Trump said the June 8 report from the paper had been proven to be "shockingly false and untrue", and accused the paper of knowingly publishing it as such. It included a commitment from Mexico, for instance, to deploy its new National Guard to the country's southern border with Guatemala.

One senior government official insisted to the Times that the Mexican government agreed to move to deter migrants faster and more aggressively than they ever had before this week's talks.

The officials did not say whether US authorities had already requested the programme be extended to particular cities.

A few police appeared briefly at dawn on the Mexican shore, people said, but they vanished as fast. The tariffs would have otherwise been implemented on Monday.

Corn-fed beef was the main red meat source, followed by pork, while chicken was the main white meat source, followed by turkey. Between each eating routine period, the people were given a washout period, during which they ate their normal food.

The U.S. also hailed Mexico's agreement to embrace the expansion of a program implemented earlier this year under which some asylum seekers are returned to Mexico as they wait out their cases.

Others, however, think that Mr Lopez Obrador had little choice beyond giving some ground in the negotiations, because the threatened tariffs would have caused economic devastation in Mexico, whose economy contracted in the first quarter of this year.

"They might have accelerated the timetable, but by and large the president achieved nothing except to jeopardise the most important trading relationship that the United States of America has".

So far, par for the course: Trump lies constantly, and likes to claim he's a good negotiator but is in fact a loudmouth who makes careless threats.

Some critics said the deal was nothing more than a way for the president to save face after threatening unpopular tariffs against Mexico. "But we don't have a specific agreement on agricultural products". And while such a measure never made it into the agreement, Mexican officials also expressed an openness to discussing something they had long opposed: having Mexico become a "safe third country", which would make it harder for asylum-seekers who pass through the country to claim refuge in the U.S.

His reupped attacks on the media outlets, which he calls the 'enemy of the people, ' come after the Times reported on Saturday that Trump had already reached the same deal he touted this week months ago.

The United States, making official a policy that has triggered opposition in both countries, said it would systematically send back asylum seekers who cross the border, pending a decision on their claims. "So we didn't bring it up, but most people know that answer".
