Next step in Assange extradition case due in United Kingdom court on Friday

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange

British Home Secretary Sajid Javid says he has signed an extradition order that would send imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States if British courts favor the move.

Assange was arrested in April at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he'd been living for nearly seven years.

Assange faces a litany of charges in the US, including one count of conspiring with Chelsea Manning, the former intelligence analyst and whistleblower, to gain access to the US Pentagon network.

The Home Office confirmed that the 47-year-old Australian had been arrested after a provisional extradition request from the United States, which has accused him of...

"He's rightly behind bars", Javid told BBC Radio 4's Today show.

Javid said that part of his role to sign all legitimate extradition requests, but Assange's fate was largely out of his hands.

Assange will soon find out whether he'll be extradited to the US.

The U.S. and South Korea also have blamed North Korea, but Malaysian officials never officially accused Pyongyang of involvement. A deal to denuclearize North Korea has proven elusive to Trump, despite two high-profile summits with Kim.

However, on April 11 this year, when Assange was arrested, Swedish prosecutors said the alleged victim's lawyer had demanded for the investigation to be reopened.

He said: "It's a decision ultimately for the courts".

He is now in a London prison after being jailed for 50 weeks for skipping bail after fleeing to the Ecuadorean embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning in a sexual assault investigation in 2012. This comes as the US, the Department of Justice filed charges against Assange in April.

President Barack Obama commuted Manning's 35-year sentence in 2017, but she was jailed again this March for refusing to testify before a grand jury.

However, the ruling does not mean the preliminary rape investigation must be abandoned, only that Assange won't be extradited to Sweden for now.

The UK's interior minister has certified an extradition order that would send Julian Assange to the U.S. on espionage charges - but the final decision on the embattled WikiLeaks founder rests with the courts.

Assange, 47, was in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years following sexual assault charges in Sweden that were dropped in May because officials couldn't physically serve him a court appearance.
