Kushner won't say whether Trump's birtherism was racist

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

Kushner declared that "I'm not here to be trusted" by the Palestinian leadership and blamed them for Trump's decisions to cut US aid for Palestinian territories and close their diplomatic office in Washington.

The Palestinian leadership has refused to deal with the Trump administration since late 2017 when Trump chose to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The exact timing for Kushner's peace plan has always been unclear, and he didn't say when it would be released in the Axios interview. For example, the administration closed its consulate general in Jerusalem; Trump's ambassador to Israel said the country is "on the side of God"; the administration moved the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem; and it cut millions in humanitarian aid to Palestinians, including funds for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). "So, again, I was not involved in that", said the adviser. After the third time he was asked, Kushner blurted out: "Look, I know who the president is, and I have not seen anything in him that is racist". The Bahrain conference "will facilitate discussions on an ambitious, achievable vision and framework for a prosperous future for the Palestinian people and the region", the White House said last month.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the US' Palestine-Israel peace plan arguably "unexecutable" in a private meeting with Jewish leaders on Tuesday. "Could be in the end, folks will say, 'It's not particularly original, it doesn't particularly work for me, ' that is, 'It's got two good things and nine bad things, I'm out, '" Pompeo said, according to WaPo. "I think he's here today and I think he's doing a lot of great things for the country and that's what I'm proud of" was all Kushner was prepared to say on the matter of Trump's bigotry. The senior White House adviser downplayed the incident, as he has done previously, and then said he wasn't sure how he would respond if in the same situation arose again. "As I say often, we'll see what happens".

Asked if Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman must account for the body of columnist Jamal Khashoggi, Kushner said he's still waiting for results of an investigation.

"Look, I wasn't really involved in that", Kushner replied. Trump Jr. later admitted to investigators that the goal of the meeting was to get dirt on former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

But when questioned by the journalist over whether or not the president's "birther" conspiracy about former President Barack Obama's citizenship was racist, Kushner refused to give his opinion.

Members of the media offered their own two cents about the interview, disapproval that was primarily centered on Kushner's inability to answer questions in a straightforward fashion.
