Weinstein reaches deal to settle civil proceedings for $44 million

Harvey Weinstein reaches $44-million settlement with accusers and creditors

Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein and his former studio's board members have reached a tentative deal with women who accuse him of sexual misconduct, USA media report.

The well known film producer and financier, and former head of the Weinstein Company, is reportedly ready to ante up a LOT of money to atone for allegations of past mistakes.

Adam Harris, a lawyer for the studio co-founder Bob Weinstein told a judge that "an economic agreement in principle" had been reached, the Associated Press news agency reports.

A representative for Mr. Weinstein and Weinstein Co did not immediately respond to request for comment.

If the settlement is actually agreed upon, it won't let Weinstein off the hook in the criminal case that's reportedly pending against Weinstein in New York City, but it would settle all of the multiple civil suits that have been filed against him for alleged misconduct going back decades.

He added: "I personally am very optimistic".

The proposed settlement wouldn't affect a criminal case pending against Weinstein in Manhattan where he is charged with rape and other sex crimes.

The criminal charges facing Weinstein involve two women and span almost a decade from 2004 to 2003.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein leaves the New York State Supreme Court on April 26, 2019, after a break in a pretrial hearing over sexual-assault charges.

"I'm sure that it's a kosher settlement where everything was done with the applicable laws and facts, however, at first glance, it seems unfair to those who have been subjected to Mr. Weinstein's unwanted advances".

Newsweek has contacted legal representatives for Weinstein, as well as the NY attorney general's office, for comment.
