Theresa May's successor won't get better Brexit deal: Irish minister

Andrea Leadsom resigns as Leader of the House of Commons

Theresa May's turbulent leadership of the Conservative Party will end on June 7, paving the way for a new prime minister to lead the Brexit process.

In an emotional address Friday, May said she had strived to honour the result of the Brexit referendum during her term as prime minister and that she felt certain Britain had a duty to implement it.

Mrs Leadsom, Leader of the House of Commons, said she could not announce the new Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB), which will implement Britain's departure, in Parliament on Thursday, as she did not believe in it.

The Tory leadership contest will be a packed race.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has noted "with respect" May's decision and will continue to work closely with her successor for an "orderly exit".

British Prime Minister Theresa May's resignation will signal the start of a leadership contest. And with parliament hung, factions undermining party discipline, and no party commanding an overall majority in the House of Commons, the challenge to find a way out, almost three years after Britons voted by a slim majority for Brexit, becomes thornier by the day.

Mrs May has developed a reputation for surviving in nearly impossible circumstances, but she is still among the United Kingdom prime ministers with the shortest time in office.

She had previously said she would step aside once her unpopular European Union divorce deal had been passed by parliament, and this week launched a short-lived bid for lawmakers to approve it in early June, that has now been postponed.

But, despite pledges, she has failed to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands she promised and a much-delayed social care green paper has still not been published.

She said she will step down on June 7.

The humiliating spectacle of the prime minister detailing her departure date follows a toxic response to her latest Brexit plan this week from cabinet colleagues and Tory MPs.

Former Foreign Secretary and London Mayor Boris Johnson, 54, is the current favourite for the job, having been a key Leave figure throughout the 2016 the Brexit referendum campaign.

It is now unclear what will happen to the legislation but it seems likely that any new leader will seek a renegotiation. She has survived the resignations of a string of high-profile Brexit supporters, notably former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, and has endured constant sniping from MPs on the sidelines.

The EU wants the umbrella agreement to replace over 20 large sectoral agreements and more than 100 smaller deals in place at the bilateral level. The negotiations began in 2014 and a proposed accord was unveiled in December 2018. Johnson said Friday, in Switzerland: "We will leave the European Union on October 31, deal or no deal". It paves the way for a contest to decide on a new U.K. Prime Minister.

Ireland's prime minister, Leo Varakar, said: "Obviously, as anyone can see, British politics is consumed by Brexit and will be consumed by Brexit for a very long time". The victor would then become prime minister without a general election.

Madrid warned that a no-deal Brexit appeared nearly inevitable.

She is committed to Brexit and is popular with the public, and is another younger MP that is seen as a bit of fresh air in the otherwise stale Conservative Party, but her lack of experience could count against her.

Little will be clear before late October, Europeans expect, since they don't think British lawmakers will make any hard decisions without a deadline to sharpen their minds.
