Secretary of State Pompeo's Travel to Moscow and Sochi, Russia

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo right talks with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as they meet on the sidelines of the Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting in Rovaniemi Finland on May 6

This week, the US said it was dispatching an aircraft carrier group and B-52 bombers to the Middle East in response to intelligence that Iran is preparing to retaliate for the sanctions with attacks on American interests in the region.

In theory that probably means Pompeo brow-beating Russia over how Ukraine hasn't managed to crush the ethnic Russian region along the Russian border, something the USA has long had a problem with.

But Mogherini said there are "no precise plans" to meet with Pompeo, citing a "busy agenda".

Mogherini gave a chilly response to news of Pompeo's visit, which she said was only communicated to Brussels at the last minute.

On Friday, the U.S. Pentagon announced it was sending a warship loaded with military vehicles and missiles, adding to the aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers that have already been deployed to the region.

Before his meeting with Pompeo, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian urged Europeans to remain united in support of the nuclear deal, which was signed by the United States, Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation, and which the EU helped to negotiate.

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday they would continue to support the nuclear pact because Iran continued to comply with inspections.

"No one wants Iran to be in possession of a nuclear bomb". If Iran walks away, we're back to maximum sanctions from nearly everyone and Iran loses a lot of their oil exporting business.

Pompeo's last-minute decision to visit the EU capital, announced as he boarded a plane from the U.S., set up a confrontation between the United States secretary and European diplomats who have been scrambling to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Europe sees it as key to preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.

"While Iran remains in compliance, the United Kingdom remains committed to the Iran deal".

White House Welcomes the Boston 'Red Socks'
The team's third-base coach, Carlos Febles, who is from the Dominican Republic, stood two rows behind the president. Those planning to attend (or presumed to be attending) include J.D.

All those events were cancelled to make room for the trip to Brussels, from where Pompeo was still expected to travel to the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Britain, France and Germany voiced new support Monday for the worldwide pact to curb Iran's nuclear weapons program, while warning the United States against increasing tensions in the Persian Gulf region with its show of military force and efforts to undermine the Iranian economy.

But last week they also rejected "ultimatums" from Tehran, after Iran relaxed restrictions on its nuclear programme and threatened moves that might breach the pact.

Iran responded by declaring it will scale back compliance with parts of the nuclear deal.

"We are very anxious about the risk of a conflict happening by accident with an escalation that is unintended really on either side", British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said ahead of talks in Brussels, calling for a "period of calm". They may also touch upon the Korean question.

"We call on countries not party to the JCPoA to refrain from taking any actions that impede the remaining parties' ability to fully perform their commitments", they said.

But she noted that the deal stands a chance if a joint effort is made along with other signatories of the agreement, including China and Russian Federation. "Now this instrument needs to be further operationalised and used in order to continue implementing" the nuclear agreement, Maas said.

"I'm hearing little stories about Iran", Trump said at the White House.

The U.K. and European partners, including France and Germany believe the deal reached with Iran in 2015 should continue and they have expressed regrets over the one-sided USA withdrawal from the agreement.

There was a late Sunday change of plans, with Pompeo deciding to stop in Belgium first.
