President Trump lifts tariffs on Mexico, Canada, delays auto tariffs

President Trump Departs White House For New York City

But Mexico supplied about $12 million of aluminum, iron and steel goods to ME previous year, roughly 19 percent of the $65 million ME imported from Mexico in 2018.

"After extensive discussions on trade in steel and aluminum. the United States and Canada have reached an understanding as follows, the United States and Canada agree to eliminate, no later than two days from the issuance of this statement, all tariffs the United States imposed under Section 232 on imports of aluminum and steel products from Canada".

The hostilities between the world's two biggest economies have weighed heavily the past couple of weeks on the US stock market, threatening a long rally that Trump touted as a vindication of his economic policies.

In talks over eliminating the tariffs, US officials at first tried to get their North American partners to accept quotas on their steel and aluminum shipments.

The other measure would require Canada and Mexico to better track and monitor steel shipments to make sure China wasn't passing the product through them to get around US tariffs.

Several reports citing unnamed sources in the US and Canada say the Trump administration also has reached a deal to remove metals tariffs from Mexico.

Efforts to have the metals tariffs lifted have been tied to ratification of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was created to replace the 25-year-old NAFTA and which was signed by the three countries' leaders on November 30. The Iowa senator was concerned the retaliatory tariffs by Canada and Mexico were hurting agricultural products in his home state.

News about progress on NAFTA's replacement, known as the Unites States Mexico Canada Agreement, is rumored to be forthcoming.

Trump's decision followed a Commerce Department report that concluded rising imports of foreign autos and auto parts threatened US automotive research and development capabilities and thus impaired national security.

Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corp. and others have warned of the damaging impacts of imposing tariffs of up to 25 percent on imported cars and parts.

The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, said the move should clear the way for the ratification of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) reached late previous year, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).

The White House doesn't need to take six months to make a decision, and it's unclear how much time it expects it needs to finalize its choice. Not even American automakers support it.

This announcement comes after Trump talked by phone with Trudeau about both the USMCA trade deal and the tariffs.

"I don't think there is any more doubt about it, the president is far more attracted to managing imports than expanding exports", said Rufus Yerxa, president of the National Foreign Trade Council. Yet its North American headquarters is in Houston, from which it supplies the US market.

Trump was facing a May 18 deadline to make a decision on auto tariffs.

Spokesmen for U.S. Steel and Nucor, which had advocated for maintaining strong tariff protections, could not be reached for comment.

USA automakers ostensibly would benefit from a tax on their foreign competitors.

Trump had faced a Saturday deadline to decide what to do about the auto tariffs.

The administration argues that US automakers' declining share of the domestic market coupled with foreign trade barriers is eroding USA innovation.

Foreign companies supplied theU. After he announced the tariffs, more than 100 Republican members of Congress signed a letter criticizing the move.

The tariffs will fall within two days, according to a joint U.S. Faced with a greater degree of opposition over tariffs imposed on America's two closest neighbors and key trading partners, the administration retreated.
