U.S. service members, contractor killed by Taliban in Afghanistan

3 US service members and 1 contractor killed in Afghanistan

Three American service members and a contractor were killed in a car-bomb attack in Afghanistan on Monday, the US military said.

The U.S. and NATO Resolute Support mission said the four Americans were killed near the Bagram Air Base, north of Kabul, while three others were wounded in the explosion.

According to Bagram district governor Abdul Shakoor Quddusi, a auto bomber attacked an armoured vehicle carrying foreign forces close to a gate to the base. The names of those killed were being withheld for 24 hours until the notification of next of kin has been completed, as per Defense Department policy.

As the debates on peace and a future system in Afghanistan increases among Afghans around the country, a former Taliban member of the Taliban, Sayed Akbar Agha, said that the group "should not" insist on the reestablishment of an Islamic emirate system in the country as part of the peace process and that instead they should enter direct talks with the Afghan government.

For months, the USA and the Taliban have been negotiating a potential agreement to end the 18-year war after President Donald Trump signaled that he was open to additional diplomatic conversations.

The Taliban asserted responsibility for the blast.

Seven US service members have been killed in Afghanistan this year.

The Taliban have continued to carry out daily attacks on Afghan security forces despite holding several rounds of peace talks with the United States in recent months. USA envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met with President Ashraf Ghani and other Afghan leaders in Kabul in recent days, seeking to build support for nascent discussions with Taliban representatives in Doha, Qatar.

The deadly bombing comes amid ongoing talks between the USA and the Taliban aimed at reaching a peace agreement to end the war, now in its 18th year. The Taliban have refused to meet with the Afghan government, which they view as a USA puppet.
