Trump Postpones Move to Dismantle Obamacare

Trump Says Vote On Healthcare Plan Can Wait Until After 2020 Election

After President Trump warned that the GOP needs to take up health care reform or risk getting "clobbered", Karl Rove agreed Wednesday, adding that Republicans need to do all they can to diminish the advantage Democrats now hold on health care ahead of the 2020 election.

After discussing the issue with McConnell, Trump tweeted a temporary concession on the matter but pledged that a health care vote would be taken after the next election cycle when "Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House". Roy Blunt (R-MO) (R) as he arrives at a Senate Republican weekly policy luncheon at the U.S. Capitol March 26, 2019 in Washington, D.C. While Trump has renewed his attacks on Obamacare, new poll shows Americans have more trust in Democrats and Barack Obama when it comes to health care than they do in Republicans and President Trump.

Trump previously named Scott as one of the Republican senators working on replacement legislation.

"If you know any Never Trumpers", said Vera Ortegon, Colorado's RNC committeewoman, "send them to me".

"I think you could have a long, drawn-out crisis in which our institutions lose credibility", Levitsky said.

"Everybody agrees that ObamaCare doesn't work".

Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said it makes sense to wait until after the election to attempt the large-scale health insurance overhaul the president was suggesting. If Trump wins in court, there could be swift and widespread chaos and uncertainty in American health care - at least until an alternative system is put in place - as the array of changes to industry regulations, subsidies for low-income individuals and delivery system reforms would be undone.

The resolution also ticks through numerous negative consequences that Democrats argue would result from invalidating the law, including millions of Americans with preexisting conditions being denied coverage or being offered coverage at "an exorbitant price".

And Trump recently mocked the idea that Latin American migrants coming to the USA are fleeing violence and in need of asylum. The White House did not immediately respond to questions about whether Trump's possible action would apply to air travel.

Republicans were cool after Trump surprised them last week with an unexpected pivot to the issue and his claims the GOP will be the party of health care.

"People don't like Obamacare, people forgot about it", he said, referring to the high premiums and high deductibles. First he said it was his choice to push off the health care votes. "I don't like it, and you don't like it either".

Trump has said Republicans will produce a superior replacement plan, contending in a tweet on Tuesday that it will be "far less expensive & much more usable than ObamaCare".

The past week's events have virtually guaranteed that health care would be a core issue in the 2020 election campaign.

Heading into 2020, Trump sees border security and health care as key issues for his political base and he is expected to keep pushing them even if he dials back specific threats.

With his tweet Tuesday Trump made clear there would be no vote until after the 2020 election, though he insisted a GOP plan still was in the works. Republicans are not the party of health care.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said Democrats' health care battle with Trump is "a values fight".

While Trump's references on Tuesday night were not specific, he claimed corruption and fraud a year ago in Florida and Arizona elections, where close races took considerable time to resolve.
