UK PM May: Failure to Back Her Brexit Plan Would Be ‘Catastrophic’

Jeremy Corbyn to repeat general election demand to break Brexit 'deadlock'

Theresa May is preparing to put her Brexit blueprint to a vote in the House of Commons next week with former Brexit minister Dominic Raab saying Britain should be prepared to leave with no arrangement in place. A probable first step would be a "technical" extension until July to allow the prime minister to revise and ratify the Brexit deal, the newspaper said, citing European Union sources it didn't identify.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned on Thursday that the world did not want to see a disorderly Brexit and that he fully supported May's withdrawal deal.

"I think parliament did vote for an amendment to the finance bill this week which indicated its opposition to no deal but there isn't totally specific on it, we will do everything we can to prevent a no deal exit", he added. "So we need to explore what those circumstances might be and have an opinion so that how we can proceed from there". If a confidence vote failed, he'd be under pressure to back a second Brexit referendum, risking a backlash from the many Labour supporters who voted to leave the EU.

Her deal faces nearly certain defeat in the House of Commons where as many as 200 MPs from across the political spectrum, including her own party, are expected to vote against it.

The PM has also faced further opposition to her deal from former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, who used an article in the Sunday Telegraph to urge MPs to vote down Mrs May's "bad" deal and send a message to Brussels that the United Kingdom "will not be bullied".

"I'm saying this would be [an] incredibly damaging breach of trust and it would also be very bad for Britain's reputation overseas, having made a decision to leave the European Union, if we in the end for whatever reasons found we weren't able to do it".

"If MPs who represent seats that voted 70% to leave say "sorry guys, we're still going to have freedom of movement", they will turn against the political mainstream".

Tory MPs including Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown and Sir Edward Leigh said they would support the Government in the meaningful vote.

The PM has said failing to deliver on the result of the 2016 referendum would be "unforgivable" and a "catastrophe" for democracy.

"I think it's now looking much less likely that parliament would allow a no-deal outcome anyway", said Mr Hunt.

Theresa May's Brexit plans are due to be put to the Commons next week following a five-day debate in Westminster.

TNE columnist and Labour peer Andrew Adonis said: "When Chris Grayling can organise a lorry jam and a railway timetable, we'll take his advice on fixing a political system which he did more than nearly anyone to break".

May faced further opposition to her deal from her former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab who believes the United Kingdom should pursue a hard-Brexit.

Ms Rudd said it was "right" for the government to make preparations for a no-deal Brexit, comparing it to wearing a seatbelt when driving a fast vehicle.
