Trump walks out of border security meeting after Pelosi rejects wall pitch

Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi

"Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!"

"As part of an overall approach to border security, law enforcement professionals have requested $5.7 billion for a physical barrier", he added.

"What we hear from Republican members and, frankly, quietly from many Democrat members is that when they see the scope of this crisis, when they see the facts presented to them, that they understand why the president is so adamant about doing something meaningful to advance border security".

"I was a little bit anxious that when I heard Stephen Miller was leading this speech creation that we were going to have something really outrageous", he said, referring to Trump's senior policy adviser. "The financial burden of this illegal immigration".

Mr. Trump and congressional Democrats are now at an impasse over wall funding, as the president has refused to sign any legislation ending the partial government shutdown without sufficient money for the wall.

Trump plans to visit Senate Republicans at the Capitol on Wednesday before meeting with Democratic leaders at the White House. "Get it done.' They're patriots", he said.

In his speech to the American public on Tuesday night, President Donald Trump put forward a nonsensical argument that the construction of some kind of barrier on the US-Mexico border would fix an incredible range of wildly exaggerated problems.

Trump argued Tuesday night that the wall was needed to resolve what he called a security and humanitarian "crisis".

Hoyer said if Trump follows through on a threat to declare a national emergency and use the military to build the wall without funding from Congress he could be abusing his powers.

The White House has provided no concrete numbers to back up its claim, refusing to say how much money would be brought in by the trade deal and what percentage of those financial gains would cover border wall funding.

Trump, who has long railed against illegal immigration at the border, has recently seized on humanitarian concerns to argue there is a broader crisis that can only be solved with a wall.

Trump used emotional language, referring to Americans who were killed by people in the country illegally, saying: "I've met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration".

He addressed the nation as the shutdown stretched through its third week, with hundreds of thousands of federal workers going without pay. What the hell have they done about the border? "Unfortunately, President Trump keeps rejecting the bipartisan House-passed bills, which have already received strong bipartisan support in the Senate, to re-open the government". The administration says it will act on its own to ensure the refunds. They never really stood a chance.
