Three dead in double-decker bus crash in Ottawa

Double-decker bus crashes into bus station in Ottawa

The driver of OC Transpo's double-decker bus was released unconditionally pending further investigation.

The westbound 269 bus to Kanata hit the shelter at the busy transit station in the west end of Ottawa just before 4 p.m. local time (2100 UTC) on Friday.

Two of the dead were riding the bus and one was on the platform at Westboro station, a major stop on the city's busway, Mayor Jim Watson said.

Police said investigators worked through the night to identify all three victims and contact their families and loved ones.

"That work continues this morning and no information on the identity of the three will be released at this time", a news release stated.

Photos posted on Twitter showed extensive damage to the front of the bus, with the roof of a shelter having carved deep into the vehicle's second deck after the vehicle jumped the curb and plowed along the platform.

OC Transpo said its Saturday routes serving Westboro and Dominion stations are on detour between Lincoln Fields and Tunney's Pasture stations due to the shutdown.

An investigation was opened to determine the cause of the crash, police said, adding that the bus driver was detained "and will be interviewed".

"Our (city) community has been rocked today".

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said: "Devastated to hear about those who lost their lives and were injured following the horrific bus collision at Westboro Station in Ottawa".

At least 3 people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured, according to the Ottawa Citizen newspaper.

"Such devastating news. My thoughts and condolences are with the victims, their families and all those affected by this tragedy", wrote Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, who represents the area in Parliament.

Police say the majority of the patients injured in the crash have been released from hospital, with one remaining in critical condition, six listed as serious and four considered stable.

Chief Charles Bordeleau describes the investigation into the crash, which killed three and injured 23 more, as a painstaking process. The bus could have been holding as many as 90 passengers.

Those who have pictures or video of the crash are being asked to get in touch with police, while passengers on the bus missing property are also asked to reach out.
