Productive Or Contentious? Trump And Democrats Diverge On Shutdown Meeting

Listen to Rep. Tlaib's controversial comments

"Not 'stirring the pot" Among the first tasks of the 116th Congress will be ending the shutdown, now in its 13th day and which has left one quarter of federal agencies shuttered due to lapsed funding. He also claimed his refusal to budge was winning praise, telling reporters, "I have never had so much support as I have in the last week over my stance for border security".

Hopefully we're going to have a lot of things we can get done together and I think it's actually going to work out, said Mr Trump.

Ahead of the final vote, Pelosi deployed her deal-making abilities to win over detractors, and by mid-December, she appeared to have secured the votes necessary to prevail after negotiating an agreement with some of the Democrats who had been lobbying to block her from the speakership.

"At this point, we need to take the lead here in Congress in the hopes that we can show President Trump the sweet light of reason", Schumer said.

"It's too important a subject to walk away from".

The Democrat-controlled US House of Representatives has voted to end a partial government shutdown - but the move looks certain to be vetoed by President Trump.

A veto threat issued by the White House against the House bills read: "The Administration is committed to working with the Congress to reopen lapsed agencies, but can not accept legislation that provides unnecessary funding for wasteful programs while ignoring the Nation's urgent border security needs".

Democrats also approved a separate measure to fund the departments of Agriculture, Interior, Housing and Urban Development and others closed by the partial shutdown, at levels Senate Republicans had largely agreed to past year. In the Senate, 53 Republicans hold the majority over 45 Democrats and two independents aligning with Democrats. "There is no amount of persuasion he can do to say to us, 'We want you to do something that is not effective that costs billions of dollars.' That sends the wrong message about who we are as a country".

The news that Paul Whelan holds citizenship in four countries brings worldwide pressure on Russian Federation from several fronts. Whelan, a 48-year-old former Marine and security director for a US company, was arrested a week ago in Moscow, accused of spying.

Pelosi: We're Giving 'Nothing for the Wall'
The Democrats have sworn he will " never " get any of it. "We have given the Republicans a chance to take yes for an answer". But with Trump dug in over the $5 billion he wants to build the wall, the shutdown could drag on.

Kim Jong Un warns 'Washington not to test North Korean's patience'
Last year, President Trump temporarily suspended those exercises to move along negotiations. North Korea has ceased its provocative ballistic missile tests in recent months.

But aside from a few Republicans, the GOP is digging in.

Newly-elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized the proposed border wall as "waste of money". "I mean, there's a wall between Tijuana and San Diego, right? And I know they want to do that very badly", Trump said.

Trump closed by once again commending the border officials before leaving the room without taking any questions.

While celebrating the Democratic diversity during the swearing-in ceremonies, some on social media highlighted the contrast to the Republican members, who are mostly white men. "So we would hope that they would reconsider and would support the very bills that pass the Senate", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

She reiterated that they will bring up legislation Thursday to reopen parts of the government and pledged to have a House that's "transparent, bipartisan and unifying". He says he won't allow a vote on anything "that does not have a real chance of passing this chamber and getting a presidential signature". Republicans still control the Senate, creating a divided legislative branch.

It has affected hundreds of thousands of federal workers who have either been furloughed or have had to work without pay. If the shutdown stretches on for another week ― looking more likely by the day ― it will be the longest government shutdown in history, over a $5 billion dispute in a $4.4 trillion budget.

There are ideological differences between numerous newcomers and the Democratic party's establishment. It's nearly a representation of Trump's entire legacy, all of his policies and empty promises. Democrats remain insistent they will not provide the votes to give him that funding.

"We're not doing a wall". "Does anybody have any doubt?"
