Michael Cohen Agrees to Spill the Beans in Public Congressional Testimony

Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen will testify publicly before Congress ahead of entering prison

Michael Cohen, U.S. President Donald Trump's former lawyer, will testify publicly before Congress on February 7.

On Thursday, Cohen said in a statement that he had accepted Cummings' invitation to testify "in furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers".

Trump Fixer Cohen Will Testify before Going to PrisonDonald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, will testify before Congress in February.

Soon after his appearance in front of House Oversight was announced, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) released a statement welcoming the testimony but also stressing the need for Cohen "to answer questions pertaining to the Russian Federation investigation".

The chairman of the oversight panel, Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, said the committee is consulting with Mueller's office about the testimony. The president said he did nothing wrong in the campaign finance charge, and he accused his former lawyer of lying to prosecutors to try to get a reduced sentence.

Russian Federation has denied USA intelligence agencies' findings that it meddled in the 2016 campaign, while Trump has denied any collusion with Moscow and called Mueller's probe a "witch hunt".

On November 30, Cohen struck a deal to plead guilty to one count of lying to Congress in exchange for cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller.

The payments made or orchestrated to women during the campaign - to adult-film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal - to stay silent about alleged sexual encounters with Trump are also sure to be a hot topic at the congressional hearing.

It will also examine the payments Cohen made in 2016 just ahead of the election for the silence of two women who had claimed to have had affairs with Mr Trump.

The current chairman of the House Oversight Committee is Rep. Elijah Cumming (D-Md.).

Cohen is prepared to discuss topics related to hush money payments and aspects of the Trump Organization, including the roles of the President and his children, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Prosecutors from the Southern District of NY, in addition to Cohen's own admissions, said both of the payments were made "at the direction of" then-candidate Trump leading up to the 2016 election to surpress possible damning information from becoming public.

Cohen is scheduled to present himself on March 6 to begin serving his three-year sentence for nine felonies. Michael Cohen has testified in Congress earlier but those details were kept under wraps by Republicans before Democrats stormed back to power in the midterms and took the House majority. "We hope that he will come in voluntarily to testify before the Intel Committee in closed session". In asking for a lighter sentence, Cohen's lawyer pledged in court that his client would continue to help inquiries that could continue for years.

"The request still stands, regardless of any public testimony Mr. Cohen may give on other issues", its chairman, Sen. Cummings declined to say, for example, whether Cohen would be allowed to talk about Trump Tower Moscow.
