Citizens urged to get tested for HIV

Всемирный день борьбы со СПИДом отмечают сегодня

"Thus, we must intensify our collective efforts to meet the serious challenges to eliminating the spread of HIV/AIDS among young people in Nigeria and Lagos State, in order to move towards a HIV-free generation by 2020", Dabiri said.

"In other words, the National AIDS Control Organisation must accelerate its HIV response so as not to roll back earlier gains and ensure a substantive decline in new infections to end AIDS", the report noted.

In commemoration of 2018 World AIDS day, Lagos State Government has urged residents to know their HIV status and desist from all forms of discrimination against patients. Designated on 1 December every year since 1988, it is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.

If people don't know their HIV status, they can't protect themselves, their families, their partners.

The global campaign to end AIDS has made significant strides but the epidemic remains one of the world's leading public health challenges, affecting nearly 37 million people. The Maine Center for Disease Control says about 1,800 of the 37 million people diagnosed with HIV worldwide live in Maine. 75% of all people living with HIV knew their HIV status in 2017.

Speaking also, the Director-General of the Agency, Dr. Sani Aliyu, noted that over 1,600 HIV treatment centres have been established across to country to support and cater to the treatment needs of about 1.1m Nigerians who are positive to the virus.

Only eight percent of the population has been tested for HIV or AIDS. This has resulted in reducing child mortality by 20% and reducing the rate of new infections by 44%. "Many people still only get tested after becoming ill and symptomatic". More people living with HIV are now receiving treatment that is allowing them to live longer, healthier lives.

"Knowing your status is the entry point of accessing HIV services and those who turn positive are given anti-retroviral drugs free of charge". However, it is also an important reminder that despite progress made, the world can not become complacent in its response to HIV.
