Trump says he has NEVER spoken to acting attorney general Matt Whitaker

Jeff Sessions sent a letter of resignation to Donald Trump

Protesters gathered Thursday in cities from NY to California in a warning to the White House not to derail Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Sessions had been an avid supporter from the beginning of the Trump campaign, but ran afoul of the President when he recused himself from the probe on Russia's interference after it was revealed that Sessions had had two meetings with the former ambassador from Russia, Sergey Kislyak.

Under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the investigation was overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

"It is time for Rosenstein, who is the acting attorney general for the purposes of this investigation, to order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel", Whitaker wrote in a CNN opinion piece in August 2017.

Miller's lawyer Paul Kamenar (pictured above) told reporters after the hearing that he believes that Sessions' replacement, Whitaker, has the authority to reappoint Mueller if he chooses, but argued that everything Mueller had done before that point - including indictments and plea deals - should be invalidated due to what Kamenar says is a lack of authority.

"I think there are people who are hungry to show they are scared for their country", "It's one day after the election, we're all exhausted ... and I don't think the timing of the announcement from the (Trump) administration is an accident". The investigation is looking into USA allegations of Russian meddling in the election two years ago and any possible coordination between Russian and the Trump campaign, which the president denies.

Senator Ron Wyden speaks at an anti-Trump protest at the Portland waterfront Thursday evening.

"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump. Normally, even the acting attorney general needs to be appointed by the Senate and the Congress, and they need to vet and give their blessing.

Ethics officials at the Justice Department are likely to review his past work to see if he has any financial or personal conflicts.

Denise Jenkins said she wants Senate Republicans to "grow a spine".

He's been described as a Trump loyalist and a possible threat to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Protesters converged downtown Thursday evening chanting "not above the law" as their battle cry against President Donald Trump's appointment of Matthew Whitaker as acting USA attorney general. "We care about the rule of law". In fact, it allows Mueller to pursue "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

Cramer said "the president has put in place someone who has espoused a view that protects the president". Officials there have said Whitaker will follow the regular procedure in handling any ethics issues that arise. Also, some of the leads developed by Mueller already have been turned over to other Justice Department units, including the USA attorney in Manhattan.

"President Trump has fired the attorney general".

The White House confirmed that Christie was there Thursday and met with Trump adviser Jared Kushner to discuss prison reform, according to a NJ Advance report. However, Trump derided his argument, calling him "Mr Kellyanne Conway" and insisted that Conway, who has been a critic of Trump, was only interested in publicity.
