Rain breaks, easing search for remains of California wildfire

Rain helps douse California fire but slows search crews

The nation's deadliest wildfire in a century has killed at least 84 people, and 475 are unaccounted for.

Alameda County Sheriff Coroner officers search for human remains at a burned residence in Paradise, California on 12 November, 2018.

"The fire line that remains uncontained is located in steep and rugged terrain where it is unsafe for firefighters to access due to the heavy rains", Cal Fire said.

The news is grim, but not wholly so, since Honea also said that 2,689 people originally listed in the aftermath of the deadliest and most destructive fire in state history have been found.

With help from rainfall, firefighters have contained 98 per cent of the blaze, which torched 154,000 acres (62,000 hectares) - an area five times the size of San Francisco, officials said. More than 800 volunteers were out searching Friday.

"With the rain we have been experiencing, residents should be aware of potential risks associated to the weather", the Butte County Sheriff's Office warned.

The death toll in northern California's so-called "Camp Fire" rose to 87, officials said late Saturday, adding that the blaze was nearly fully under control.

The weather service issued a warning for possible flash flooding and debris flows from areas scarred by major fires in Northern California, including the areas burned in Paradise.

Flames had surrounded the home he was visiting - and the only way out was to go through them. Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but PG&E has already been hit with lawsuits over the Camp Fire, and damages from the wildfire could exceed $15 billion, according to Citgroup Inc.

The Woolsey fire, which straddled Los Angeles and Ventura counties, began November 8 and killed three people, burned more than 96,000 acres and destroyed 1,600 structures before it was contained Thursday. The town of Paradise was a popular destination for retirees, with people aged 65 or older accounting for a quarter of its 27,000 residents.

Thousands have evacuated to makeshift shelters, like a tent city outside a Walmart in Chico. Most of the victims of the fire identified so far were of retirement age.
