Hundreds rally in support of Mueller’s investigation

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions Says Resigning At Trump's Request

"It's not ok for someone to break the law and be above the law".

A furious US President Donald Trump on Wednesday fired his attorney general Jeff Sessions and threatened to retaliate with a "warlike posture" against the new Democratic House majority if it uses its subpoena power to launch investigations into his administration, signaling a precipitous deterioration in the domestic politics of the world's leading democracy.

Organizers called on people around the United States to protest at 5 p.m.

"The president could have done anything he wanted for many, many months now, and he's chosen not to", Toomey said.

Demonstrators in New York City chanted slogans including "Hands off Mueller" and "Nobody's above the law" before marching downtown. Sessions had held on to his job as the nation's top law enforcement officer despite frequent bursts of embarrassingly public criticism from Trump.

Crowds also turned out in Chicago; Greensboro, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn., and many other places.

Bondi has been a stauncher supporter of Trump during his campaign for the presidency and after taking office.

Responsibility for the probe was then passed to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

What does this mean for the Mueller probe?

Critics fear he will move to limit the investigation, or attempt to end it alltogether.

Sessions, who likely suspected his ouster was imminent, was spotted by reporters giving some of his grandchildren a tour of the White House over the weekend.

The midterm elections saw the Democrats win control of the lower house of Congress for the first time in eight years, meaning that from January onwards Trump will finally face an opposition that has teeth.

The ongoing investigation has produced guilty pleas from four former Trump aides.

The new acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, is a former US attorney who spent years working at the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, which was funded in part by the Koch brothers.

Many marchers said they were no fans of Sessions.

To this point, Trump has heeded advice not to directly interfere, though a new chapter in the relationship with the probe may have begun with the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as new acting attorney general. Trump's foundation gave a 25,000 donation to a committee backing her election in 2013, prompting complaints it came at a time she decided not to join a Trump University lawsuit.

DONALD TRUMP JR: Could the US President's son be the biggest scalp claimed by Robert Mueller?

"You would always take that meeting".

"I think if you were to ask anyone with DOJ experience they would say 'Huh?"

Mr Whitaker has publicly criticised Mr Mueller's conduct several times since the inquiry began in May previous year and taken the side of Mr Trump, who has dismissed it... Sessions recused himself in March 2017 because of his work on Trump's campaign and following the revelation that he had met during the 2016 campaign with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.

He also once tweeted a prosecutor's opinion piece that described the Mueller team as a "lynch mob", and wrote his own op-ed saying Mueller would be outside his authority if he investigated Trump's family finances.

Rallies were staged across the Tampa Bay area on Thursday to support special counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election may be in jeopardy.

Trump has made it clear, Swalwell said, that the only thing he cares about with the Justice Department and who runs it is "that person's position on his personal criminal exposure and that of his family in the Russian Federation probe".

He said he knows little about Whitaker, other than his portrayal as a staunch "Trump loyalist". "That's where the left seems to be combining those two issues".
