Copa Libertadores final to be played outside of Argentina, CONMEBOL confirms

River Plate v Boca Juniors: Postponed Copa Libertadores final second leg will not be held in Argentina

The second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate will be played outside of Argentina on 8 or 9 December at a venue yet to be confirmed, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has announced.

River fans are confronted by police ahead of the Copa Libetadores final with Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires. On Sunday, it was postponed again, hours before kickoff, after Boca said they were not in a fit state to play.

In their request, Boca cited an article in the regulations which could lead to the club being awarded the Copa Libertadores title without the second leg being played, something the River leadership considered a "complete and utter disgrace." .

CONMEBOL says that the game will be played on either December 8 or 9, but it is all pending the decision of the federation's disciplinary committee filed by Boca Juniors requesting River Plate's disqualification.

The first leg of the final ended 2-2.

A meeting will take place on Tuesday at its headquarters near Asuncion, Paraguay, to determine the date and venue of the return leg.

D'Onofrio also disagreed with Conmebol's decision to strip River of the right to host the final at the Monumental stadium.

Pilot Whales Die In Mass Stranding On Remote New Zealand Beach
Meanwhile, on Sunday, 10 pygmy killer whales were found stranded at Ninety Mile Beach on the North Island in an unrelated event. The particular geography of the spit, which had shallow beach shelves, confused the whales.

River Plate supremo Rodolfo D'Onofrio claimed there had been pressure all the way from the top of Federation Internationale de Football Association for the game between River and Boca to be played on Saturday at the Monumental stadium, even with the unrest that left some Boca players injured and ultimately resulted in the postponement of the game.

"It can't be that a River-Boca will not be played [there] because some people caused a disaster", he said.

River fans hurled rocks and wood at the bus, shattering windows.

Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez told reporters that "the final can not be played in Argentina".

At least six players were injured, including Boca captain Pablo Perez who was hurt in the eye.

'Deep, in fact, are the bonds that unite the two Argentine football clubs - both founded by Genoese immigrants at the beginning of the twentieth century - with the Ligurian capital, ' Genoa's government said.
