Changes Sarri needs to make to turn Chelsea into title contenders

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri has explained why N'Golo Kante won't play in the middle of Chelsea's midfield.

Now playing in advanced areas of the pitch, the French global, who has recently signed a new deal with the west London club, has been utilised in a more offensive role - a decision that Shearer says puzzles him, adding that the midfielder's best position would be further behind in front of the back four, where, on a defensive point of view, Kante is a level above Jorginho.

Sarri also hinted it may be possible that Kante - who last week signed a new five-year contract making him Chelsea's highest-paid player on around £290,000-a-week - does not yet understand what his manager is asking him to do.

"I want to play as a center midfielder a very technical player", Sarri said Wednesday. "I see a normal midfielder player", Carragher told Monday Night Football. "I don't want Kante in this position", he said in a pre-match press conference ahead of facing PAOK in the Europa League.

"He was lost in the position, he attacked the other penalty area too much".

"I think working with Poch you know how good he is", the England global said. "But it was only a reaction to the difficulties".

Maurizio Sarri conducted one-on-one meetings with his Chelsea players as he sought an explanation for a perceived lack of "determination" in their loss to Spurs.

The Blues are already through to the Europa League last 32 and need a point to guarantee finishing top of Group L with one match to go. I had a meeting of ten minutes individual meetings. The target is very clear in my mind: "the target in the short period is to win something, and in the long period it's to become the best team in Europe".

Irrespective of the minute he plays in a single game, the Frenchman always show zeal, enthusiasm and determination to help his team get better results. I want to see that we have learned our lessons'.

And finally, Sarri admits he's majorly concerned about Eden Hazard's ongoing injury issues.

Sarri said: 'It's very hard for them, I think, to tell me why.

Striker Olivier Giroud says the Blues are determined to show their strength against PAOK, who they beat 1-0 in Greece in September.

Chelsea suffered their first defeat of the season this weekend and Tottenham Hotspur humiliated them to a 3-1 victory. We played really badly, we didn't have the same intensity as in the other games.
