Turkey, Saudi leaders hold phone talk on missing journalist

President dispatches Pompeo after talking to Saudi King

The statement did not directly acknowledge Khashoggi's disappearance, which happened October 2 when he visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Turkish officials have reportedly shared with Washington contents of video and audio recordings that allegedly contain evidence supporting claims that Khashoggi was murdered by the Saudi government.

Reuters reported, citing a company statement, that the largest bank in the USA did not clarify whether Dimon's decision was directly affected by the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance.

USA senators called for reactions ranging from boycotting an upcoming economic summit in Riyadh to ending support for Saudi military operations in Yemen.

The statement came after the Tadawul stock exchange in Riyadh dropped by 7% at one point during the week's first day of trading, with 182 of its 186 listed stocks showing losses by the early afternoon.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident, has not been seen since he entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documentation he needed in order to marry his fiancée. Many of those business leaders have cited Khashoggi's alleged killing inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul this month as their reason for backing out.

Saudi Arabia is the world's top oil exporter, and Kudlow was asked on "Fox News Sunday" whether a Saudi response could affect energy prices. American lawmakers threatened tough punitive action against the Saudis, and Germany, France and Britain jointly called for a "credible investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance. His disappearance has touched off a diplomatic crisis amid fears that he may have been killed at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Republican Marco Rubio of Florida says that includes the multi-billion dollar arms deal that President Donald Trump wants to preserve.

On Sunday, the Saudi government hit back against criticism, threatening to "respond with greater action" in the face of impending sanctions.

"The kingdom affirms its total rejection of any threats or attempts to undermine it whether through threats to impose economic sanctions or the use of political pressure", an official said, according to state news agency SPA. "The Saudi economy has vital and influential roles for the global economy".

Saudi King Salman spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by phone on Sunday, the Saudi foreign ministry said, telling Erdogan: "No-one will get (to) undermine the strength of this relationship".

Already, worldwide business leaders are pulling out of the kingdom's upcoming investment forum, a high-profile event known as "Davos in the Desert".

But the president has also said "we would be punishing ourselves" by canceling arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

"If Khashoggi had disappeared in Turkey when he was at a hotel or a private residence, I think there is plausible deniability on the part of the Saudi government", Brennan told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Meanwhile, a group of 22 senators already triggered the Global Magnitsky Act Wednesday with a letter to Trump that requires him to undertake an investigation of Khashoggi's disappearance, and to determine whether to impose sanctions on individuals who were responsible.

Oil futures rose on Monday on concerns about supply, while stocks in Saudi Arabia fell sharply on Sunday.

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several US businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland.
