India on October 4 deported seven Rohingya to Myanmar, despite United Nations warnings that the men faced persecution in a country where the army is accused of genocide against the Muslim minority.

The Assam Police has handed over seven Rohingyas to Myanmar authorities here on Thursday following the completion of deportation formalities.

The men, who had been in detention for immigration offences since 2012, were handed over to Myanmar authorities at a border crossing in India's northeast state of Manipur.

Today, seven Rohingya men, Mohammad Jalal, Mokbul Khan, Jalal Uddin, Mohammad Youns, Sabbir Ahamed, Rahim Uddin and Mohammad Salam were forcibly returned to Myanmar by the Indian Government.

It said the deported Rohingya men are at "grave risk" of being subjected to human rights violations by the Myanmar government and the Supreme Court's clearance to the first-ever deportation is a "dark day" for human rights in India.

Mehta said that after the MEA contacted embassy of Myanmar and they confirmed the Myanmarese citizenship of the illegal immigrants following which one month visa and relevant documents were issued.

The ministry said that the illegal influx of several Rohingya migrants into India began four to five years ago, which was prior to the exodus that saw more than 400,000 Rohingya flee to Bangladesh.

Following Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's directive, northeastern states sharing worldwide borders with different countries had tightened security to ensure that displaced Rohingya Muslims do not enter India.

But Ko Ko Linn, a Bangladesh-based Rohingya political activist, said he was anxious about the men's fate. Advocate Prashant Bhushan sought a PIL hearing in the Supreme Court of India to impede the Government from deporting the refugees of Rohingya which was trenched.

The UN refugee agency's India office expressed concern over Indian government decision to deport Rohingya. The Myanmar Embassy has agreed to take them back. "The deportation will take place via Moreh (a border town) in Manipur", news agency ANI quoted a senior official of the home and political department of the state.

On Thursday, seven Rohingya men were deported from India to Myanmar.

An estimated 40,000 other Rohingya have taken refuge in parts of India.

It said the seven Rohingya were found by the competent court as illegal immigrants and Myanmar had accepted them as its citizens.

The Rohingyas, who fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar, are settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

But a United Nations human rights official said the forcible return of the Rohingya was a violation of worldwide law. Last year, Union MoS for Home Kiren Rijiju had said in Parliament, citing available data, that over 14,000 Rohingya were staying in India.
