Senate confirms Brett Kavanaugh as Supreme Court justice

It may be bad news for those who wish to see Kavanaugh confirmed despite numerous allegations of sexual assault in his past, however for Palin it could be to her advantage in the popularity vote.

Collins wasn't the only senator to announce a plan to vote yes in the full vote tomorrow.

The end of the month-long fierce battle between the ruling Republican and the opposition Democratic gives a major political victory to President Donald Trump and his party ahead of the November 6 mid-term elections.

"But Democrats had pointed to not only the sexual assault allegations, which they described" but also questions about Kavanaugh's temperament during the hearing last week and whether he had lied about his drinking during high school and college, and what certain references in his high school yearbook meant.

Hundreds of protesters against Judge Kavanaugh were arrested in Washington DC, on Thursday, including comedian Amy Schumer. He accused Democrats of using destructive, unwarranted personal attacks on the nominee and even encouraging the protesters, saying, "They have encouraged mob rule". Vice President Mike Pence presided, his potential tie-breaking vote unnecessary.

MSNBC reporter Garrett Haake on Friday seemed to be over and done with Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins' "will-she-or-won't-she" schtick, as Americans waited for her 3:00 pm announcement about how she would vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

News of Collins's key vote was a strong blow to opponents of the controversial Kavanaugh, including sexual assault victims and their allies who view his impending nomination as a referendum on the #MeToo movement and its limits. "I do hope that Judge Kavanaugh will not allow the partisan nature this process took to follow him on the court".

The Women's March tweeted this image showing U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) after she announced Friday afternoon she would vote yes on U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. And that report might give her an excuse to vote for Kavanaugh.

Collins is up for reelection in 2020, and while no Democrat has officially challenged the longtime senator yet, whoever does will have lots of money to play with.

Flake joins fellow Arizona Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, voted "no".

"I do not believe these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court", Collins said.

It was the closest roll call to confirm a justice since 1881, when Stanley Matthews was approved by 24-23, according to Senate records. But she said his actions Friday - the closed office, a "yes" in a preliminary vote and his plan to vote yes Saturday - made it increasingly hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Manchin was the only Democrat to vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

But he said he believes Kavanaugh will "determine cases based on the legal findings before him". White House Counsel Don McGahn, who helped salvage Kavanaugh's nomination as it teetered, sat in the front row of the visitors' gallery for the vote with deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said, "The Senate has been an embarrassment".

"We must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy", said Collins, perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican.
