The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries.

Police said on Twitter that emergency personnel were carrying out CPR.

It is not yet clear why the man took the woman hostage.

A police spokesperson told NBC News that "one woman has been taken hostage" but could not confirm if shots had been fired.

Before getting into the pharmacy, the man lit a Molotov cocktail inside a restaurant at the station, Cologne police said. No details have emerged yet about the hostage-taker or any potential motive. "We're doing everything to get the hostage out of there unharmed", police spokesman Christoph Gilles said initially.

Likewise, natural disasters, such as major hurricanes or flooding incidents, leads to a four percent jump in mental-crisis risk. Researchers warned that as the earth's temperatures rose, the rain fall also increased due to increased water evaporation.

Before police stormed the pharmacy, the entire train station, one of the biggest in Germany, was evacuated and all train traffic was stopped, leading to delays and cancelations across western Germany.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily.

Two explosions were heard in the area during the hostage rescue not long after elite counter-terrorism team (SEK) rushed to the pharmacy building, NTV broadcaster reported.

Police commandos were deployed and the busy railway station was closed off to all passengers and trains.

Police said they found a passport issued to a 55-year-old Syrian man at the scene, and that the suspect had claimed to be a member of the Islamic State militant group.
