U.S. to spare some Apple products from latest China tariffs

President Trump has threatened to intensify his tariff assaults on nations which fail to bow to America's trade demands as China braced for a fresh attack.

In a tweet Monday, the president said billions of dollars and jobs have been pouring into the U.S.as a result and increased costs have been essentially unnoticeable. "If countries will not make fair deals with us, they will be 'Tariffed!'"

President Trump said on Monday his administration would make an announcement about China after the close of markets, without elaborating.

Only last week, Beijing said it welcomed overtures from U.S. officials offering to re-start trade talks, but press reports indicate China would call off any meetings if the new punitive duties take effect.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow announced during an interview on Monday that President Donald Trump would likely be imposing new tariffs on a "couple hundred billion" worth of imports from China.

China had already vowed to retaliate if the USA imposed further tariffs.

The move, which had been expected since at least the weekend, imposes 10 percent tariffs on the products.

Beijing has said it would retaliate to trade war escalation with tariffs of its own as well as qualitative measures, which it has not specified but are perceived within the USA business community as likely to include increased customs and regulatory scrutiny.

A Treasury spokesman did not immediately respond to a query on the status of the China talks invitation.

The Chinese government may decline to participate in proposed trade talks if the Trump administration moves forward with additional tariffs, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing Chinese officials.

The report quoted one senior Chinese official saying the country would not negotiate "with a gun pointed to its head".

The Trump administration also threatened to pursue additional tariffs on $267 billion worth of Chinese goods if Beijing retaliates against farmers or other US industries.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, known as a moderate Republican and a former computer executive, told Reuters on a trip to China that the anxiety and uncertainty around tariffs risked limiting Chinese investment in the United States.

While the US aims to squeeze Beijing, . the Trump administration's additional tariffs could jeopardize the discussions, . and lead to fresh retaliation from China.
