Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweets opening testimony during congressional hearing

Top executives from Twitter and Facebook vowed to Congress on Wednesday to continue their internal campaigns to rid their powerhouse social media platforms of inauthentic accounts used to spread misinformation.

Before the hearing, President Donald Trump, without offering evidence, accused the companies themselves of interfering in the upcoming US mid-term elections, telling the Daily Caller that social media firms are "super liberal".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to meet with state attorneys general this month to discuss whether social media companies are stifling free expression, according to a statement released today.

Some Republicans have also charged social media companies with bias against Trump and other conservatives.

"Let me be clear about one important and foundational fact: Twitter does not use political ideology to make any decisions, whether related to ranking content on our service or how we enforce our rules".

After his stint at the Senate, Dorsey faced off with House members at a second hearing where GOP lawmakers accused Twitter of trying to silence conservative voices.

"Each of you have come a long way with respect to recognizing the threat", Senator Mark Warner, the committee's top-ranking Democrat, said. "I'm not even sure it's trending in the right direction".

There might also be overall uncertainty about the future of Twitter, now that Dorsey has publicly said the company is fundamentally rethinking core parts of the business. Dorsey said that action was a mistake, which was corrected, and prompted an apology from Twitter. In an interview with The Daily Caller this week, he said social media companies had backed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Twitter Chief Executive Officer Jack Dorsey said in his prepared remarks that a "relatively small number of bad-faith actors were able to game Twitter to have an outsized impact".

Sandberg repeated Facebook's acknowledgements about failing to crack down on influence campaigns stemming from Russian Federation that interfered with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Trump faulted Twitter on July 26, without citing any evidence, for limiting the visibility of prominent Republicans through a practice known as shadow banning.

The afternoon hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee was to focus on bias and Twitter's algorithms. "It violated the values of our company and of the country we love", Sandberg said in her written statement, which Facebook shared with Fortune.

The companies have conveyed to the commission that all sponsored content in favour of a political party, political leader or candidate will flag the concerned sponsor and the amount paid for posting the content on Facebook, WhatsApp (owned by Facebook), Google or Twitter.
