Trump defends Supreme Court nominee, accuser faces deadline

Brett Kavanaugh with his family and Donald Trump

Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) listens during a markup hearing September 13 before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Feinstein has demanded that the confirmation vote be postponed until the FBI investigates claims of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. He has been meeting with White House officials this week.

California college professor Christine Blasey Ford wants the FBI to investigate her claim Kavanaugh assaulted her when they were teenagers, something Kavanaugh denies.

Kavanaugh has strongly denied the incident in which Ford says he pinned her down and covered her mouth while trying to undress her when he was 17 and she 15.

Committee Democrats have not participated and want Federal Bureau of Investigation involvement. "The F.B.I. conducts background checks on judicial nominees". Instead, the department compiles information about the nominee's past and provides its findings to the agency that requested the background check.

Mr Trump told reporters: "Look, if she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting and we'll have to make a decision".

Asked about Ford's request to allow the FBI to investigate Ford's allegations first, Collins said that would "it seems to me, that this reverses the normal order of things".

Republicans, some of whom see the allegations as a stalling tactic by Democrats to thwart Kavanaugh's confirmation, have been pushing to confirm him before November's midterm elections, when they could lose their 51-49 majority control of the Senate.

Greg Rinckey, a lawyer specializing in employment law and the security clearance process, said Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks aren't meant to dig up decades-old claims that never resulted in a police report or criminal charges.

Rain-soaked furniture workers helped him quickly empty more than 1,000 mattresses from a warehouse in a low-lying strip mall. Despite all that, authorities are warning residents to stay sheltered and vigilant, as the worst may still be on the way.

"On the Democratic side, Robertson says the key lawmakers to watch are Sens". "The FBI is looking for any kind of current problem". I mean, after all, read all the details she put in the Washington Post.

"Nor is it tasked with investigating a matter simply because the Committee deems it important". Chuck Grassley, asked for it.

"Donald Trump... of all people... can ask them to". Spurred on by the #MeToo movement, sexual misconduct receives much more attention than it did then, and allegations of wrongdoing have toppled powerful men in politics, media, the arts and other fields.

The Senate, the committee chairman notes, "and only the Senate", is tasked with vetting a president's Supreme Court nominee.

"Very hard for me to imagine that anything happened", he said. That means it would fall under the laws of Montgomery County, Maryland, where the statute of limitations would seem to preclude charges. Kavanaugh has denied Ford's allegation, and Judge says he doesn't remember any such thing. That would complicate any chance of Trump securing a Supreme Court nomination. He should be impeached not confirmed to the Supreme Court. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the most senior member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote on Twitter in response to King's post. They say the White House counsel directed the FBI to investigate when Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment.

Lawyers for Ford say that before she testifies on Capitol Hill, she wants the FBI to investigate her allegations.

Last week, news surrounding a private letter that had been sent to Feinstein, Democrat of California, raised potential questions about Kavanaugh's nomination.
