Roger Federer exits US Open, denied Djokovic match-up

The heat proved more of a problem for Novak Djokovic than his rival

A Federer v Djokovic clash would provide the ideal contest to propel the US Open into the second week, with the two champions having claimed seven titles at Flushing Meadows between them.

A tie-break was required, raising the volume on a court that had often been stunned into near silence, and incredibly it was Millman who prevailed, coming from 3-1 down and saving one set point before taking his second.

John Millman of Australia hits a return to Roger Federer of Switzerland during the eighth day of the US Open.

Sept 3, 2018; New York, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia tries to cool off in the heat during a change over while playing Joao Sousa of Portugal in a fourth round match on day eight of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"I just thought it was very hot tonight", said Federer indicating there was injury.

"But, look, at some point also I was just happy that the match was over, I guess", Federer explained. There was no circulation at all.

Heat, age and a relentless John Millman on Monday combined in a ideal storm to drive Roger Federer to the US Open exit, leaving the victor of a record 20 Grand Slam titles looking every bit the 37-year-old that he is. "It's one of the first times it's happened to me", Federer said after the match. The sweltering conditions played a key part in NY and Millman was able to adapt better. He comes from maybe one of the most humid places on earth, Brisbane.

"Some days it's just not the day where the body can cope with it". "It's 1 o'clock now", John said during his on-court interview after defeating Roger Federer.

Kaepernick has new deal with Nike though he’s not in NFL
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Nike hasn't officially announced the contract. Trump described players like Kaepernick who knelt for the anthem as " sons of bitches " who should be fired.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", he said in a courtside interview.

"He reminds me of David Ferrer and those other guys that, you know, I admire a lot when I see them, when I see how they train, the passion they have for the game", Federer said.

"He's a hero of mine".

"He's definitely not at his best, but I'll take it".

Federer broke first on the way to a 5-3 lead in the set, but Millman won the last four games, breaking Federer twice.

Now there's the small task of beating Djokovic too. As the unforced errors mounted - Federer would finish with 77, almost three times as many as Millman's 28 - Federer's wife, Mirka, couldn't bear to look, placing her forehead on her hands in the guest box in the stands.

Things got tougher in the second as a sluggish Djokovic labored before again clinching it with a break. And now he's gone, beaten at the U.S. Open by an opponent ranked outside the top 50 for the first time in his illustrious career. Federer served 10 double faults and committed a frankly staggering 76 unforced errors throughout the match, which helped pave the way for easily the biggest win of Millman's career.

The result meant there would be no quarter-final showdown with old rival Novak Djokovic who will now face Millmann instead.
