Kavanaugh Accuser Willing To Testify If Asked

Kavanaugh accuser said to be willing to testify before US Senate committee

A number of Republicans have said the vote on US President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, should be paused while allegations of sexual assault are properly heard.

On Sunday, Christine Blasey Ford, a professor in California, came forward as the woman behind the letter accusing Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault at age 17.

Anyone who comes forward as Dr. Ford has deserves to be heard, so I will continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented and respectful manner. Moderates in both parties including pivotal Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said Kavanaugh and Ford should be given the chance to testify before the committee, a move that could delay the confirmation process.

In a statement provided by the White House, Kavanaugh denied the allegation. They also plan to question Ford's credibility and point out that she did not tell anyone about the incident when it first happened. She did not announce what the accusations against him are or who is making them.

Asked about the allegations on Fox & Friends, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president and one of the highest-ranking women in the White House, gave a barely comprehensible answer, trying to simultaneously argue she wants to hear Ford's story while casting doubt on it.

According to a report by the online political news magazine Politico, three sources "close to the White House" now expect Trump to "go after" Ford, as he has done with women who have accused him and other men of sexual assault in the past, rather than reconsider his nomination of Kavanaugh.

The panel would also likely seek testimony from Mark Judge, Mr Kavanaugh's friend and classmate.

He had been on a smooth confirmation track to be Supreme Court Judge, but the new allegations have disrupted the process.

Blunt, vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, has given full-throated support to Kavanaugh's nomination since July.

A potential "no" vote from Flake would complicate the judge's prospects.

Ford told the Post that Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed at a Maryland party in the early 1980s, clumsily tried to remove her clothing and put his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream. It was expected that only staffers for Republican senators would be on the call, as Democrats have advocated that the FBI investigate Ford's claims in lieu of further action by the committee.

Senator Diane Feinstein, the top Judiciary Committee Democrat, issued a statement calling for a delay.

"I've made it clear that I'm not comfortable moving ahead with the vote on Thursday if we have not heard her side of the story or explored this further", Flake told The Washington Post. The letter's contents leaked last week and Ford identified herself in an interview with the Washington Post published on Sunday. Judge denied the allegations in an interview with The Weekly Standard, a conservative publication, after The New Yorker detailed them on Friday. The Senate Judiciary Committee has set its vote on his nomination for this coming Thursday.

Ford initially contacted both Feinstein and The Washington Post in July, but at the time, she was not willing to make her allegation publicly.

Ford recounted the incident in couples therapy back in 2012, while her therapist jotted down notes, indicating that she didn't just come forward with these allegation after Kavanaugh was nominated. Feinstein said she passed Ford's account on to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Republicans say the allegations have already cast a shadow over Kavanaugh but that it does not appear to be enough to change the votes in the narrowly divided 51-49 Senate.
