Japanese stars create incredible piece of tennis history at US Open

Is Naomi Osaka ready for a Grand Slam title

Madison Keys is into her third semifinal in the past five Grand Slam tournaments, including two in a row at the US Open.

There was a subdued atmosphere on Arthur Ashe Stadium with the crowd struggling to get into the match.

After Nishikori took the next set on a tiebreaker, it was Cilic's turn to fight back as the 2014 champion needed just a single break in game seven to take the match into a decider.

This one lasted four hour and eight minutes and sent Nishikori into a showdown with No.6 seed Novak Djokovic or unseeded Australian John Millman.

Osaka faces either United States 14th seed Madison Keys, the runner-up in 2017 or Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Naomi Osaka and Kei Nishikori have created tennis history at the US Open.

"The quarters was sort of my mental goal, every time I played a Grand Slam", said Osaka.

In the match before Nishikori's, Naomi Osaka moved into her first Grand Slam semifinal by routing Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday in the U.S. Open quarter-finals.

USA cancels Pakistan aid over militant record
A Pakistani motorcyclist rides over images of President Trump in August 2017 after Trump accused Pakistan of harboring militants. The disclosure came ahead of an expected visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US General Joseph Dunford, to Islamabad.

After Cilic evened the match by taking the fourth following a 10-minute break for heat, Nishikori was on the verge of running away with the fifth, holding a break point for a 5-1 lead.

Initially, it looked like the match might follow a similar storyline from 2014 when seventh seeded Cilic took the opening set from a sluggish Nishikori. She defeated Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday.

She raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set and then 4-0 in the second against the shaky Tsurenko, who finished with more unforced errors than points in her first major quarterfinal.

The 20-year-old Osaka is the first Japanese woman to make the last-four of any Slam since Kimiko Date at Wimbledon in 1996 - a year before she was born.

She won 59 points to just 28 for the unseeded Ukrainian, who knocked off No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round. She won 20 of her 22 first serves, and she broke Tsurenko's serve five times. So far in this Open, she's held opponents scoreless in three sets, and she's dropped only one set thus far. The 14th-seeded American used her big-strike game built on serves and forehands to overpower No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday night.

Key's compatriot Serena Williams will match up against Anastajia Sevastova in Thursday's other semi, with the six-time champion looking to match Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 major wins - just a year after giving birth to her first child.

Keys was the runner-up to Sloane Stephens at the U.S. Open in 2017, then lost to Stephens in the French Open semifinals this year.
