Fort Trump? Polish President Makes Pitch For US Permanent Military Base

US President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda during a meeting in the Oval Office

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump told Polish President Andrzej Duda that he's considering his counterpart's offer of putting a USA military base in Poland, because of concerns about Russian military aggression in the region.

"There is a whole range of arguments in favor of the fact that the presence of the U.S. armed forces in this area is absolutely justified", Duda said.

Poland has already met the 2%-of-GDP defence-spending level that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies agreed to work toward by 2024 - a spending goal that Trump used to bludgeon other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members. "And I'm convinced that for the interests of the United States, also pertaining to the security of the United States itself, the presence of the US forces in our country is important", Duda said during a joint news conference with Trump.

"I invite you to post more American military troops in Poland", Duda said at a joint press conference with Trump, adding that a United States military presence in his country would be a "guarantor of security".

The U.S. president is renewing his criticism of a planned new natural gas pipeline linking Germany with Russian Federation.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. military was studying options with Poland but cautioned that no decisions had been made.

"The United States commits to explore options for an increased USA military role in Poland and we will intensify our consultations to determine the concept's feasibility", the White House said in a statement later. A government source in Poland confirmed that such a proposal had been made. He said the Senate had contacted the Pentagon about the matter.

Facing Russia's increased military activity, Poland has been pressing for the 3,000 US troops now on rotating deployment in Poland to be upgraded to a larger, permanent presence.

Germany has always been the primary base for American forces in Europe, with approximately 35,000 US service members stationed in the country.

"I invite you to post more American military troops in Poland", Duda said, calling a United States presence a "guarantor of security".

Duda noted Polish purchases of American arms and said he wants to buy more.

And the White House reinforced that judgment, saying a partnership between the USA and Poland "is critical in light of growing security challenges characterized by aggressive Russian behavior".

In 2015, a U.S. diplomat said one would not be established but that the United States maintain would maintain a "permanent rotating presence" in the country. Duda is in town for one day of talks with the administration.

Trump and Duda also used Tuesday's meeting in the Oval Office to discuss trade and energy policy. I think Russian Federation has acted aggressively.

"I think it's a very aggressive situation".

"They respect force. They respect strength as anyone does".

Russian Federation isn't the only one opposed to the idea.

Such arguments haven't deterred Poland.

The Commission is expected file a lawsuit against the Polish government before the European Court of Justice on Wednesday.

Poland was suspended Monday from the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary and faced a hearing Tuesday over alleged breaches of EU requirements for judicial independence. Trump says it's "ridiculous" and bad for the German people.

"With friends like that, who needs enemies?"

Last June, the United States sent its first shipment of liquified natural gas to Poland after its state-owned natural gas and oil company signed a five-year contract with a UK-based energy company with a branch in the United States.
