Don't Be Fooled by Hurricane Florence Being 'Downgraded.' It's Still Very Dangerous

Officials worry that as many as 1,000 of the town's 6,300 residents are staying in the town, which is less than 5 feet above sea level.

Hurricane warnings are in effect for the South Santee River in SC to Duck, North Carolina, and Albemarle and Pamlico sounds.

The hurricane brings "an impact that can potentially put your life at risk, so you need to plan for it", Cline said.

"Just because we have a landfall to the south doesn't mean your out of the woods because the wind around this storm is huge", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said Wednesday morning.

The Hurricane Center reported heavy rain bands with tropical-storm-force winds had arrived in the North Carolina Outer Banks. If the two systems become tropical storms, it would be the first time the Atlantic has had five named storms at once, Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach said.

The storm's center was about 145 miles (235 km) east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as of Thursday night. The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia declared emergencies to help speed up government aid efforts. Reacting to the possibility of a more southerly track, Georgia Gov. When and where it will make landfall is unclear.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for north of the North Carolina/Virginia border to Cape Charles Light, VA, and for Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

The storm is moving toward the northwest at 17 miles per hour, the NHC said.

The biggest surge should occur just to the north of where the eye of the storm comes ashore, which the Hurricane Center projects in southeastern North Carolina. More to come on this part of the forecast.

"Residents in the path of these devastating storms should comply with all evacuation orders and other emergency instructions".

National Guard soldiers from the state, North Carolina and Virginia are mobilizing to prepare for hurricane recovery efforts. In North Carolina, Cooper says, "2,800 soldiers will be on active duty, joined by even more on standby". "This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast".

Long said the danger was not only along the coast.

Both power plants have also been ordered to shut down their nuclear reactors 12 hours before the hurricane hits their region, Roger Hannah, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told Reuters.

While Hurricane Florence continues barreling toward the Carolina coast, the Caribbean got some good news Wednesday: Isaac appears to be weakening.

Even with some weakening that is predicted just before it makes landfall, the storm "is expected to remain a unsafe major hurricane as it approaches the coastline", the hurricane center said.

Hurricane Florence has changed course, according to the latest weather models.

Florence is predicted to turn more toward the northwest through Thursday - but then is expected to head more west-northwest and stall a bit over the Carolinas.

Florence's hurricane force winds now extends 80 miles from the center, while the tropical storm force winds reaches almost 200 miles, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Atmospheric scientist at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction James Kossin explained to Vox why hurricanes during warmer conditions can cause so much rainfall. "This is not going to be a glancing blow", Byard explained. "It's been an ordeal but we're coming through this fairly well", Arakawa said at a news conference. As of Thursday afternoon the storm was generating sustained winds of 105mph, as storm surge water has begun to rush into homes and streets along beachside communities.
