Challenger Pressley notches upset victory in MA congressional race

Ayanna Pressley, right, upset ten-term U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano in a Democratic primary Tuesday night.

"I'm influenced by my lived experience, but also the people I listen to and work with every day", she said. Since she will not face a Republican opponent in November's midterm election, Pressley will most likely become the first African-American woman to represent MA in the U.S. House of Representatives.

During the campaign, the 44-year-old Pressley acknowledged she would likely vote the same way as Capuano on most issues, but argued she would be a different kind of political leader for the district and the state. Pressley was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, and has been profiled in several news outlets.

Pressley was scheduled to thank volunteers and supporters at her campaign headquarters Wednesday afternoon. "I voted for Pressley because she has and will challenge polices", she said.

However, unlike Crowley, Capuano had fiercely contested the MA race by racking up endorsements, attending debates and highlighting his consistently liberal voting record in one of the most Democratic districts in a traditionally Democratic state.

"I'm sorry it didn't work out, but this is life, and this is O.K. America's going to be O.K. Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman, and I will tell you that MA will be well served", Capuano said, according to The New York Times.

The outcome was the latest win for a progressive challenger against a veteran politician in nominating contests for November's congressional elections.

Deputy shoots man who fired weapon at California racetrack
It has been reported by several local news outlets that a sheriff's deputy was shot but no civilians were injured in the incident. People at the venue saw a string of sheriff's and police cars responding to the fairgrounds around 6:40 p.m.

Although Pressley and her opponent shared a number of progressive values, her demand for the abolition of ICE, and her instance that she would bring a "bold activist leadership" to DC may have sealed her fate.

"It seems like change is on the way", Pressley added.

And it's in the biggest city - Boston - where Pressley, a city councilor there since 2010, trounced Capuano. Just a third of the population is white, with black, Hispanic and Asians constituting most of the other two-thirds.

That was about the residents of the MA 7th congressional district who I have legislated in partnership with, who I have governed with these last eight years on the Boston City Council. Capuano has been an established progressive Democrat, supporting issues like single-payer healthcare.

The Washington Post reported that Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA) conceded to Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley after polls closed in the state.

Pressley-who campaigned on the slogan "Change Can't Wait" and refused corporate donations-spoke out against the Democratic status quo as well as President Trump in her victory speech, the Boston Herald reports.
