Apple Watch Series 4 could take bite out of Swiss market

New Apple Watch Series 4 steals the show

Apple is expected to showcase three new iPhones on Wednesday, including its biggest and most expensive model yet, as the company seeks to widen the product's appeal amid slowing sales growth.

Apple has added a ton of new functions to the watch and given it a bunch of tools to track your health in a number of new ways.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB capacity models in space grey, silver and a new gold finish starting at €1,179 and €1,279, respectively, from apple.com/ie. It can classify if the heart is beating in a normal pattern or whether there are signs of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), a heart condition that could lead to major health complications.

Apple does tend to charge a premium for its products, and there is very much in evidence here.

What Apple Watch can do the ECG is, of course, fun, but whether you get pleasure from this process as prisock around your heart and women yelling at you "don't move!"? Apple says it will educate you when you first start using the app, but that process was not previewed in advance. It gives users heart rhythm classifications and heart profiles can be stored in the health app. Usefully, this heart profile can be made into a convenient PDF to show to your doctor.

This new device starts at $399 for the Global Positioning System version and $499 for the cellular version.

"One app creates an electrocardiogram, similar to traditional electrocardiograms, to detect the presence of atrial fibrillation and regular heart rhythm, while the other app analyzes pulse rate data to identify irregular heart rhythms suggestive of atrial fibrillation and notify the user", Gottlieb said. All old Apple Watch bands will fit on the new case sizes.

Fitbit shares plunge after Apple Watch unveil
It will retain its 18-hour battery life despite having to power a larger screen and new bells and whistles, Williams said. Normally, people keep an eye on their watch - Apple's new smart watch, announced Wednesday, wants to keep an eye on you.

The watch's fall detection feature also has Oza excited.

Companies have been working for years to come up with wearable digital health products to tap into an aging, health-conscious and well-heeled population.

The first is a heart monitor that goes beyond what's available in current smartwatches.

Since the Apple Watch launched in April 2015, most people haven't figured out why they need to buy one. If after such a tumble the watch detects no movement, it will assume you're out cold and need help. If the wearer remains inactive and doesn't respond, the watch will contact emergency services as well as their emergency contacts.

Apple insists that all the personal health data it is collecting is just that - personal - and that it is up to you to determine when and with whom to share it. (Other Class II devices include some powered wheelchairs and pregnancy kits, according to the FDA website.) In its letter to Apple clearing the feature, the FDA listed as a risk factor the potential for mistakenly flagging a problem, prompting unneeded treatment. The research paper was produced to FDA after which, the watch received Class II certification.

The readings may not always be helpful, and doctors are advised not to use electrocardiograms as a screening tool for someone without symptoms, said Dr. Rita Redberg, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco.

Apple's formal entrance into medical devices brings heft to the idea of tracking health with consumer wearables.
