10 attacks Obama unleashed on Trump, GOP in midterm speech

US President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Ford Center in Evansville Indiana

In a speech at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, Mr Obama said Americans were living in "dangerous times", urging Democrats to vote in November midterm elections to restore "honesty and decency and lawfulness" to government.

"When you hear how great the economy's doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started", Obama said at the University of IL. "He is a symptom, not a cause", Obama told students at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign. "He's just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years, the fear and anger that's rooted in our past".

Former President Barack Obama speaks to a full crowd at the University of IL campus in Urbana on Friday.

"I want every single one of you to host events in your community to get registered and to get them fired up", she said in a conference call with organizers Wednesday, when she announced events she would attend later this month in Las Vegas and Miami. Next week he'll be in OH to campaign for Richard Cordray and other Democrats.

In another dig at the current administration, Obama called those who target people of color and religious minorities "bullies" and said Americans are supposed to stand up to them, not follow them.

"Former presidents generally have avoided critiquing their successors, but Obama has not kept up that tradition, having made a number of critical remarks about Trump since he left office in January 2017".

Obama made a case against voter apathy by unloading on the current state of the Republican Party, saying among other things that they are abdicating their responsibilities by doing nothing "when the president does something insane".

"If you don't like what's going on right now - and you shouldn't - do not complain".

Last month, Obama released a first round of endorsements - 81 candidates up and down the ballot - and there will be a second round of endorsements and additional campaign activity in advance of the midterms, according to his office.

The speech at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign kicks off Obama's first campaign events ahead of the November midterms: a rally for several Democratic congressional candidates in California Saturday, and an event for Richard Cordray, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in OH, on Thursday, noted CNN.

"With the House in Democrat hands, they won't be able to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but they will be able to guarantee that no more pro-growth, pro-worker legislation will be enacted".

The "veil" in Obama's "veiled criticism" fell away Friday. On Saturday, the former president will stump for House Democratic candidates from California at an event in Orange County, a conservative-leaning part of California where Republicans are at risk of losing several congressional seats.

Obama is likely to be less helpful in some of the most competitive Senate races playing out in states Trump won. Then the sitting president said he found his predecessor's words boring.

He said Americans and politicians of both parties should stand up against discrimination and "stand up clearly and unequivocally to Nazi sympathizers".

President Obama speaking to students at the University of IL. "Because there is actually only one real check on bad policies and abuses of power".

Mr Trump told supporters in Montana yesterday that Republicans needed to maintain control of Congress to stave off possible impeachment proceedings against him, although Democrats have played down any discussion of that approach.

"If it does happen, it's your fault, because you didn't go out to vote. OK?"

ABC News reported that "Trump told U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell to make Palij's deportation his number one priority when he got to Berlin".
