Head of development of chemical weapons for Assad killed in Syria, media

The Scientific Research Centre in Masyaf has been targeted by the Israelis several times and most recently was in last month, giving rise to reported suspect that Israel is behind the assassination of Asber, according to the watchdog.

The Times report suggested that Israeli has been launching fierce attacks against Iranian and Hezbollah forces in Syria because it fears that, once the civil war is over, those forces would turn against Israel.

It's believed that the deceased had close ties with Al-Assad as well as the Iranian regime and, according to British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the unit being used for chemical weapons development.

The New York Times on Monday quoted "a senior official from a Middle Eastern intelligence agency" as saying that Israel was behind the assassination.

An Israeli government official declined to comment on reports of Asber's death when asked by Reuters.

Since 2007, six Iranians with connections to Iran's nuclear and missile program have been assassinated by the Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency.

Al -Watan's owner is Syrian President Bashar Assad's cousin, Rami Makhlouf. Their standoff now however has been further complicated by the extensive presence in Syria of Iran, which maintains advisers and allied militias embedded with the Syrian army.
