First fine handed down for violation of Denmark’s new ‘Burqa Ban’

Danish police have fined a woman for wearing a niqab in a shopping complex local media reported

A Muslim woman has become the first person to be fined in Denmark under a new law which prohibits wearing garments which cover the face in public.

According to a local media reports, a 28-year-old woman has been fined after an altercation with another woman who was trying to pull her niqab off at a shopping centre in Horsholm, near Copenhagen.

Mr Borcher said: 'During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again'.

Police obtained CCTV footage of the incident.

Should the woman refuse to pay the 1,000 kroner fine, the case will be sent on to the courts.

"She chose the latter", Borchersen said.

Recently people of all ages also took to the streets in Copenhagen in protest of the controversial ban, wearing face veils including the niqab and full-length burqa.

The two women were both charged with breaching the peace.

The full-face veil is a highly charged issue across Europe.

Repeat offenders of the ban could be fined up to 10,000 kroner (£930).

Borchersen added that the woman was informed she would receive a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156) in the post for wearing the facial covering, and that she would need to remove the veil or leave the public space.

The country's much-debated "Burqa Ban" has prohibited full-body burqas, as well the niqab.

Supporters argue it enables better integration of Muslim immigrants into Danish society.

It does not mention burkas and niqabs by name, but warns that anyone who wears a garment that hides their face in public will be fined.

Belgium, France, Germany and Austria have also imposed bans or partial bans.
