Why England manager Gareth Southgate calls Harrogate home

Croatia world cup win

The largest British audience for a live sporting event since the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics watched England's dramatic penalty shootout with Colombia as Gareth Southgate's team reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.

Nick Pope, pictured with Harry Kane prior to England's victory over Colombia.

"It'll be the most hard game they'll have played so far, they can bet on that".

Even when England lost the toss on which goal to use, he said he was able to joke about it.

"This was special but I want us to go on", said Southgate, whose own penalty miss saw England lose to Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 96 at Wembley.

England do not win penalty shootouts.

WHY RUSSIA WINS: After watching Russia take down a naive and arrogant Spanish team, who's to say Russia can't beat anyone on this side of the bracket?

English football is changing, and not only because the national team has finally managed to win a World Cup penalty shootout.

It is here that the habitual battle between football's two dominant continents, who have produced all previous World Cup winners, will take place.

DeMarcus Cousins Agrees To Sign One-Year, $5.3M With Warriors
The Warriors made a steeper investment on that down payment, throwing opposing teams scrambling on how to bolster their roster. To think, the Warriors previously spent the first day of free agency losing out on potential targets.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney believes the country is right to start "dreaming" of winning the World Cup this year.

"We stood tall and we weren't going to let it affect us", said the striker who scored with a second-half penalty to set England on the way to a quarter-final against Sweden before Yerry Mina put Colombia level at 1-1 in the 93rd minute. What's most notable about the Scandinavians is their insistence that mentality and mindset ultimately are what give them a chance in every game.

"Sweden is another team we have a poor record against". "I cheered Colombia's goal as if I had headed it myself".

England will expect to have the majority of possession against Sweden, but can they make better use of it?

The game was bad-tempered and Geiger at times allowed players to get away with dissent.

Argentina flirted with disaster in the group stage and although hopes were high that they could improve after beating Nigeria in the group stage, it was not to be.

On Gareth Southgate's side he said: "Nobody speaks about England but they are unsafe".

The 32-year-old pulled off a smart stop from an Iago Aspas spot-kick in their dreaded penalty shootout on Sunday afternoon, and also denied Koke moments before.
