Chicago clashes after USA police kill black man

Chicago police officer put on desk duty after fatal shooting sparks protests

A man was fatally shot Saturday evening by Chicago police in the South Shore neighborhood, sparking demonstrations that resulted in four officers being injured from thrown rocks and bottles.

The Chicago Police Department said an officer fired at 37-year-old Harith Augustus about 5:31 p.m. when Augustus reached for his weapon.

The size of the crowd created a tense situation, and police cordoned off the area.

Protestors shouted, "Who do you protect?" Issa reported that two officers shoved him to the ground and smacked his cellphone out of his hand.

Witness Gloria Rainge told the Chicago Sun-Times that officers instructed the victim not to sell loose cigarettes, which he denied doing.

Protesters march to the 3rd District Police Station about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018 in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove Ave in Chicago.

An officer opened fire when it appeared the man was reaching for a weapon, Waller added.

For hours after the shooting, people remained on the street and yelled at police. Black Youth Project interviewed one of Augustus' friends at the barbershop, who said he was a quiet and good man.

Trump lands in Great Britain for first United Kingdom visit
Trump will depart Britain Friday for Finland to prepare for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday in Helsinki. The declaration was unusual given the topic being discussed was whether the President would support a Hard Brexit for the UK.

"We find no documentation supporting him being [a] concealed carry [permit holder]", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

The protest came amid long-simmering tensions over frequent instances of police shootings and brutality against African-American residents in both Chicago and across the country.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.

Maria Hernandez, a 27-year-old Black Lives Matter Chicago organizer, said police were wrong to charge and hit protesters, some of whom struck officers. After the release of that video, the city erupted in protest.

In the video below, police officers can be seen arresting more than one person; Issa said he saw "at least a dozen arrests". He was, and was shot in the back killing him.

Four protesters were arrested Saturday, while three or four officers sustained minor injuries during the protests, according to officials.

A confrontation then ensued and the man was shot, Guglielmi said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said in a statement to WLS that there would be a "thorough, objective and unbiased investigation and requests the public's patience and cooperation".
