Brett Kavanaugh '90 Nominated to US Supreme Court

Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick

Republicans want a speedy process to ensure the vote is held well before the November 6 midterm elections in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs, with Democrats trying to seize control of Congress.

The 2013 United States v. Windsor and 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges rulings on same-sex marriage were both decided by narrow 5-4 rulings, and if confirmed Trump's nominee Brett Kavanaugh would likely flip the court to a 4-5 vote against equality for future cases.

In addition, Blumenthal contended that "Judge Kavanaugh, if he is a justice, would be the swing vote" in deciding if Trump could eventually pardon himself.

Gorsuch's nomination became possible because McConnell blocked Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy in 2016. And when I say "the conservative cause", I don't mean just the positions your local Republican congressional candidate might advocate. He also has taken an expansive view of executive power and has favored limits on investigating the president. But Democrats will cast Kavanaugh as part of the same Washington "swamp" Trump vowed to drain. And control of the Senate is in play, which wouldn't stop Trump from making another SCOTUS nomination if a liberal justice retires under his watch, but Democrats could try to mitigate that next pick's conservative lean.

"Not being a politician, I think people wanted to hear what some of my choices may be, and it was pretty effective", Trump said of the list, on the day Kennedy's retirement was announced.

In the days leading up to Trump's announcement, some conservatives were concerned Mr Kavanaugh would not be far enough to the right on certain issues including abortion and health care.

Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, is a friend of business. "Because he's anxious that Mr Mueller will go to the court and ask that the president be subpoenaed and ask to do other things necessary to move the investigation forward and president Trump knows that Kavanaugh will be a barrier to preventing that investigation from going there". "Substantively, a debate continues to bubble about whether a Supreme Court nominee's judicial philosophy is a fair basis for inquiry by the Senate (and for voting against a nomination), or whether the confirmation process should focus only on whether a nominee meets objective criteria pertaining to qualifications, temperament, ethical propriety, and the like", he wrote.

Scott Pruitt's Resignation Partly Caused by Morocco Trip
Trump tweeted Thursday that EPA deputy Andrew Wheeler would "assume duties as the acting administrator of the EPA". Republicans say Wheeler is well-qualified to lead the EPA, having worked at the agency early in his career.

The White House says Pence is also planning to attend the weekly Senate policy luncheon with Republican senators to discuss Trump's nominee. "Judge Kavanaugh has the qualifications that make him immensely qualified to take a seat on the highest court in the land". Last year, Justice Neil Gorsuch, another relatively young nominee, was successfully added to the bench.

In a primetime announcement at the White House, Mr Trump praised his pick as a "brilliant jurist".

The Judicial Crisis Network announced on Tuesday that it had funneled $1.4 million into cable and digital advertisements in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia to pressure Democratic senators in densely red states to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. He works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for Trump's eventual selection to win confirmation.

Since 2006, Kavanaugh has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often called the nation's second most powerful court. The White House said Monday that former Arizona Sen.

Now, Casey is certainly within his rights to oppose Kavanaugh because he finds his votes in the various cases referenced above extreme or problematic. "His own writings make clear that he would rule against reproductive rights and freedoms, and that he would welcome challenges to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act".

"That's how she votes", he said.
