World No.1 Halep slides past Muguruza, into third RG final

GETTYSerena Williams has withdrawn from the French Open

World number one Simona Halep is two wins away from her maiden grand slam singles title after defeating Angelique Kerber at the French Open to set up a semi-final against Garbine Muguruza.

Simona Halep, the current incumbent, has never won a grand slam, while her opponent Garbine Muguruza won Wimbledon previous year to add to her 2016 Roland Garros title. She has now made the semis at three of the four majors with Wimbledon being the only Slam where she hasn't featured in the final-four yet.

In short, the market has been convinced that Halep is the better player throughout this event, but yet has ditched her for this particular match-up, and it's hard to understand why.

Ahead of the French Open 2018 clash, the 23-time Grand Slam victor called out the parts related to her in Sharapova's autobiography as "hearsay".

Halep converted her first match point when Muguruza sent a final backhand long. "Like I said, you have to just take your opportunities when you get them, and it's just match by match, basically".

Stephens, who is now into the semi-finals of a major for the third time, leads Keys 2-0 in head-to-heads but they have never met on clay.

In short, this is proper, pressure second-week of a grand slam tennis.

"When you're writing an autobiography, I don't think there is any reason to write anything that's not true", Sharapova said.

When the top-seeded Halep and No 3 Muguruza meet Thursday, their contrasting styles will match up with plenty at stake. It ranked among one of the most lopsided losses ever suffered by Sharapova in her Grand Slam career.

Egypt gamble on Mohamed Salah’s fitness
A four-week recovery would still leave Salah ready for the knockout stage if Egypt get there. Salah will not join his worldwide colleagues until June 9, it was announced.

But apart from team-mate Kevin De Bruyne, no player in Europe's top five leagues had more assists than him. He is joined by Mesut Ozil , Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller who also made the cut for the tournament.

"But today was certainly not one of those steps". "Looking at Madrid, Rome, I think that's always one of the toughest back-to-backs on the calendar, especially on a surface like clay".

The 2012 and 2014 Paris champion, who missed the 2016 tournament because of a doping ban and past year when she was refused a wild card, was broken six times, committed 27 unforced errors and won just five points on her own serve in the second set.

This time, she made no mistake.

Kerber again failed to serve out the set after breaking back for 6-5 as Halep forced a breaker.

A rare misplaced groundstroke from Halep gave third seed Muguruza a break to get on the board at 5-1, but Halep put away another forehand victor to take a one-sided opening set.

After 39 consecutive sets won, Nadal dropped his first set since 2015.

Rafa Nadal and Diego Schwartzman shared numerous breaks of serves in their quarterfinal matchup which resulted in the Spaniard's streak of not dropping a set coming to an end.

Halep won in an hour and 32 minutes, and was awaiting the victor of the second all-American match between Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.
