Swiss tribunal clears banned Peru captain Guerrero for World Cup

Peru's talismanic striker Paolo Guerrero is going to the World Cup after all

The tribunal, Switzerland's highest court, effectively "suspended" the CAS ban and said: "Guerrero can now participate at the next World Cup". But a Swiss court has now given Guerrero permission to play.

The interim ruling puts the ban imposed by CAS on hold until full consideration of the case at a later date.

That decision followed an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) which considered six months as too lenient.

He appealed the decision, having previously received the support of Hugo Lloris, Simon Kjaer and Mile Jedinak, the captains of Peru's World Cup rivals.

Guerrero, who will nearly certainly not have had another chance to play at the World Cup even if Peru qualified again, is now free to lead his country in their first appearance at the tournament for 36 years.

In December 2017, FIFA banned Guerrero for one year for failing a doping test with the FIFA Appeal Committee later reducing the sanction to six months.

Guerrero has released a statement, saying, "There are no limits".

LeBron James Muscled Cleveland Into The NBA Finals Yet Again
It was the fifth time in James' postseason career that he played all 48 minutes in what was his 235th playoff game. James said Friday night after his seventh 40-point game in 17 outings in this postseason.

The verdict came four days ahead of FIFA's Monday deadline for Peru to finalise its 23-man World Cup squad.

The Peru forward and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) both later appealed to CAS with Guerrero hoping for the ban to be fully lifted and WADA asking for the penalty to be extended. He argued the stimulant had not been performance enhancing and was accidentally consumed in contaminated tea.

So far, the CAS panel has only issued its decision, without grounds.

Earlier on Thursday CAS issued a statement saying it would not object if Guerrero was cleared to play in Russian Federation.

Last month Guerrero gained the support of all three captains of Peru's Group C rivals - including Mile Jedinak, France's Hugo Lloris and Denmark's Simon Kjaer - who co-signed a letter urging Federation Internationale de Football Association to lift the suspension and allow him to take his place in the side.

Peru were probably the happiest of the 32 finalists on Thursday after veteran Guerrero was cleared to take part in the finals in the latest twist in a long-running saga which has kept the Andean nation on tenterhooks.
