Senate approves pot bill with dozens of amendments

Elizabeth Warren of MA, said in a statement that Washington 'needs to get out of the business of outlawing marijuana'.

The president said Friday that he backed Senator Cory Gardner, a Colorado Republican, in his efforts to bring a bill that would make the drug legal.

The legislation would ensure states have the right to determine the best approach to marijuana within their borders.

Earlier this year, Gardner retaliated against Sessions's attacks on legal weed by threatening to block Justice Department nominations in the Senate.

Here's some good news for potheads coming from Capitol Hill: a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a new bill on Thursday that would change federal laws prohibiting marijuana. During his campaign for office, Trump repeatedly said the legalization question should be left up to the states.

Senator Warren took to Twitter to promote the bill in a series of social media posts, writing that the "federal government's marijuana policies are broken, outdated, and disregard the rights of states like MA & CO that have taken their own thoughtful approaches".

The senators say they have bipartisan support in the Senate and the House of Representatives for the bill.

He added: "David has never wanted anything for himself that he hasn't earned, as his sole desire has always been to contribute". They have, however, distanced themselves from and disagreed with President Trump on a variety of issues.

Chip Paul of Oklahomans for Health, the group that gathered enough signatures for medical marijuana to appear on the ballot, praised Trump's comments.

"Hopefully President Trump's support will be enough to convince House and Senate leaders to at least allow a vote on this bill", he said.

Trump has never touched drugs, alcohol or cigarettes after watching his airline pilot brother Fred lose his battle with alcoholism in 1981 aged just 43. Coming out in favor of the bill could further sour his already troubled relationship with Sessions, who left the president fuming previous year when he recused himself from the federal probe into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, despite Trump's orders.

The measure, unveiled at a Capitol Hill news conference, wouldn't legalize the drug in states that haven't sanctioned its use or sale.

California and eight other states, as well as Washington, D.C., have legalized all adult use of cannabis. We're taking action to protect businesses that need access to basic banking services.

In January, Sessions reversed an Obama-era policy that had eased up on federal marijuana enforcement in states like Colorado with permissive laws.

Sessions has also said he believes that the marijuana legalization movement is a serious contributing factor in the country's opioid crisis and overdose deaths. The bill also would legalize industrial hemp nationwide. Cory Gardner and Massachusetts Democratic Sen. But Trump's U.S. Attorney General - former Alabama Sen.
