Republican-leadership backed immigration bill goes down in flames

President Donald Trump speaks during a roundtable about tax reform at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Saturday

After the bill failed, House Republican leaders postponed a vote on a measure they billed as a compromise, which would have included a path to citizenship for some young undocumented immigrants and addressed the practice of family separation at the border while making new restrictions on immigration.

The House overwhelmingly rejected a Republican compromise bill on immigration Wednesday - only 121 Republicans backed it, compared to 193 for an earlier, more hard-line measure.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, countered that the Democratic measure didn't solve any of the big problems with the USA immigration system, such as a backlogged legal immigration system and lax enforcement that encourages people to try to jump the border, figuring they'll be quickly released into the country.

Before the vote, Democrat Adriano Espaillat said on the floor of the House: "We need to finally ask ourselves: Will we continue to be a country of aspirations, or will we continue to be a country of deportation?"

"This victory will be bring relief to all the parents and children who thought they may never see each other again", ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt said in an email. "This bill cuts legal immigration by 40 percent", he said.

In the wake of that bill's demise, relations within the GOP deteriorated further, with Freedom Caucus members blaming House leadership for not whipping votes aggressively enough to get the measure over the finish line. GOP aides said Republicans had yet to agree on bill language, and the effort was complicated by a federal judge who ordered that divided families be reunited with 30 days.

He blamed Ryan for failing to deliver a more well-rounded approach, pointing to at least one bipartisan bill that was not allowed to come up for a vote. "Unfortunately, many who voted against the bill ... were more concerned with politics than people and policy", Love said in a statement. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., one of the bill's sponsors - was the latest example of Trump's erratic dealings with Congress.

Congress from election districts that were later struck down by the courts as either racial or partisan gerrymanders. The Como neighborhood, which is a predominantly African-American neighborhood, is at the heart of the dispute.

Despite all of the effort, the bill's would have faced trouble in the U.S. Senate had it passed out of the House.

"If that doesn't succeed, then we'll cross that bridge", Ryan said. It would also limit legal immigration, provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and end family separations. The opposition was from all Democrats and 112 Republicans.

During a radio interview on KOA 850-AM in Denver, Buck said he agreed with Trump that Democrats "for the most part" are sabotaging any progress on immigration.

But he took a different tack Wednesday, tweeting that the House should pass a bill seemingly just to send a message.

After a more conservative plan was voted down Thursday, lawmakers delayed the vote on the compromise legislation in an attempt to secure additional votes.

Yet the title of the president's action makes its true intent clear: "Executive Order Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation".
