Pushing the envelope: Why was Kim's letter for Trump so big?

Kim Yong Cho left and John Kelly central in the White House

And the envelope is literally huge.

US President Donald Trump has reinstated the planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, telling reporters outside the White House Friday, "I think we're going to have a relationship, and it will start on June 12".

But Trump said some very odd things, in fact, about the letter from Kim during his interaction with the reporters. Trump has not yet revealed what was written in the letter, but he sure seemed happy to get it.

Why was Trump's Oval Office meeting with North Korean Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol longer than anticipated? The photo made rounds on social media, where theories abound why Kim would have sent Trump what seemed as a comically oversized letter. The Moon administration has been deeply wary and careful not to affect delicate negotiations between US and North Korean officials over the June 12 summit. Syria opened its mission in Pyongyang in 1969. It's probably none of those things, or at least, not entirely.

South Korea's and Japan's defence ministers, in a conference session on de-escalating the North Korean crisis yesterday, stood on opposite ends of the debate.

Fueling the concept is a misplaced belief in Washington that crippling economic sanctions changed North Korea's strategic calculus and made the communist country eager to seek a deal with the USA, according to Cho.

Spanish police release Browder as arrest warrant not valid
He also tweeted a photograph of an arrest document from the Spanish interior ministry, which said he was accused of fraud. He noted that Thursday's dust-up was, in fact, "the result of a SIXTH Russian arrest warrant using Interpol channels".

When asked if he could offer a "flavor of what the letter said", Trump said: "It was a very interesting letter".

For if Trump does not secure a firm commitment from North Korea on denuclearization that is credible and verifiable before the summit, either in the form of a joint communique to be issued during the meeting or in some format before, Trump needs to do the unthinkable - again: Cancel the meeting once more or even walk out.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, who on Friday called the summit back on for June 12, is expected to lodge at the luxury Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore. Hours later, Trump said the summit was potentially back on. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's traveling to Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, twice in recent weeks for pre-summit negotiations with Kim.

But Kim has also conducted his own parallel outreach - holding two meetings with South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, and sending envoys to meet with teams from the South on other initiatives such as possible gatherings for families separated by the Korean War more than 60 years ago. "He will then talk about denuclearization, ending hostility and normalizing relations between the countries". The president said that he has not yet read the letter.

After the meeting, the North Korean delegates chatted with Trump on the White House lawn. Who's going to pay for Kim Jong Un's hotel stay?

The Korean War broke out when the Soviet-backed North Korean army invaded an ill-prepared South Korea on the night of June 25, 1950.
