Philippines Duterte tells United Nations human rights expert - 'Go to hell'

Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte sparks outrage by kissing woman on stage in South Korea

Critics have slammed the Philippine president for kissing a Filipina on the lips before thousands of cheering Filipino workers while on a visit to South Korea.

"It was a despicable display of sexism and grave abuse of authority", a Philippine senator, Risa Hontiveros, said in a statement.

During the event, two women were called up to the stage to receive a book from the Filipino president.

In an interview posted on social media by a Duterte supporter, one of the women involved in the incident later explained that "there was no malice" in the kiss, and that the president had asked if she is single or married.

Duterte told the crowd it was just for fun, but critics condemned what they said was his latest macho antic degrading women. Duterte asked. "But can you tell him that this is just a joke?". The crowd was loudly teasing the President and the lady to seal it with a kiss already.

But it was described as "disgusting theatrics of a misogynist president" by Philippines rights group Gabriela.

"Kissing an ofw in front of a public event in another country is so unethical, the line between ethical and unethical, moral and immoral are blurred to Duterte as long it serves his personal interests", another woman wrote.

Visa investigates "service disruption" across Europe

"This will cost you a kiss", Duterte said in Filipino.

"They should be able to criticise Duterte's inappropriate and wrongful actions, because when people start tolerating a leader's offenses, it becomes blind fanaticism".

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte arrives at Incheon International Airport, in Incheon, South Korea, 03 June 2018. Duterte later apologized for the comments, then retracted his apology.

"His repeated acts of machismo is meant as entertainment to hide the reality of his rapidly slipping popularity", Joms Salvador, Gabriela's Secretary General said, listing the issues Duterte is facing, including the extra-judicial killings and corruption allegations against government ministers.

"The kiss doesn't mean anything except to entertain and make other Filipinos in the gathering happy".

Duterte remarked that the country's judicial independence was under threat of outside forces following the Supreme Court's dismissal of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who the president views as an "enemy". "That's one thing. But she was so handsome, the mayor should have been first, what a waste".

"I was angry because she was raped", he said. In February, he suggested shooting female militants "in their vaginas". They say postings on platforms like Facebook and Twitter spin an inaccurate, glowing image of the president.
